Today we’d thought we’d show you a bit of detailing for one of our most talked about projects: the iconic atrium for the Grade II Senate Building at the University of London. A sinuous structural glass roof was created to fill a courtyard, adding to the history of the building while also making its own architectural mark. The design is made up of 107 utterly unique glass panels, some of which were actually six sided. Due to the undulating character of the roof, each glass panel had to be bespoke designed to fit the steel framework. The entire roof is bonded using over 200 linear metres of Sika structural silicone, allowing it to be held together without any mechanical fixings at all. Each glass panel features a solar control coating, an argon filled cavity, 2 layers of toughened glass and a PVB layer. Delicately fitted into a lattice of steel, with a tolerance of merely 4mm, this was not a project that could be rushed!
