Earthworm Foundation Africa Engages at the Parallel Conference of Cameroonian Civil Society. Last week, Earthworm Foundation Africa actively participated at the parallel conference of Cameroonian Civil Society. This event gathered civil society actors to voice concerns and perspectives on Cameroon’s mining, oil, gas, and energy sectors under the theme "Promoting sustainable mining and energy for inclusive development in Cameroon." The conference aimed to: ✅ Encourage constructive dialogue between civil society, government, and industry representatives. ✅ Raise awareness about the importance of sustainable mining and energy. ✅ Promote collaboration between different stakeholders. ✅ Strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations with up-to-date information, tools, and resources. 🔊 **Earthworm Foundation Africa's Impact** Désiré Ndoumou, Senior Manager and Training and Impact Lead, presented the Centre for Social Excellence (CSE) program the organization is running in Guinea. This program equips key stakeholders in the mining sector—local communities, municipalities, government, mining companies, and civil society—with essential tools to address social, environmental, and economic challenges. The program emphasizes dialogue, collaboration, and innovation. Désiré outlined CSE’s pathway and curriculum, highlighting successful implementations and potential replications in Cameroon to address the pressing issues in the mining sector. With the support of the Alcoa Foundation, Earthworm Foundation has developed robust pedagogic expertise through the CSE program in Guinea. Through this program, we collaborate with major stakeholders such as the Ministére des Mines et de la Géologie, REB (Réseau Environnement Bauxite), CHAMBRE DES MINES DE GUINEE, and the community in training social practitioners to manage social and environmental tensions within the bauxite mining Boké region. 🌟 **Want to Learn More? ** Curious to learn more about our CSE program and how you can benefit from our training? The Blended Capital Group - ESG, Governance, Strategy and Finance Integration Leadership Focused on Impact Delivery
Capacity development is core to #asm formalization. Many capacity dimensions need focus as professionalization takes hold. 🏹 coops, associations or companies that are implemented need to be governed - a variety of #governance capabilities need to developed 🏹 miners need to work safely - workpractices and use of PPE need to be developed 🏹 miners want to increase productivity- skills in equipment and on good practices need to be developed 🏹 formalized miners will interact with suppliers and with downstream value chains - business skills need to be fostered to manage relationships in stable predictable ways The bottom line - capacity development isn’t about half say courses, it is about fostering the broad suite of business, technical and operational skills needed to catalyze and sustain gains from formalization over the course of time where different individuals combine a broad variety of skills. Miners often extend from neighboring communities and interact with suppliers in these communities. This means that capacity development extends to neighboring communities recognizing that stable predictable business relationships being developed include community participation. Last but not least, effective capacity development requires capacity. Those engaged on ASM formalization need to foster skills in order to understand what local capacities need to be developed and how to go about this work. With different places having differing starting points, targeted analysis and focus is needed. The Blended Capital Group and our partners are committed to reimagining outcomes in ASM. We know that the results are commercially realistic, enhancing both the dignity and productivity of work. We know that a capacity development lens is important for sustaining gains. We know that now is the time. Levin Sources Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) BanQu Inc. 🌍Empowering artisanal miners in Zimbabwe: A step towards responsible Lithium extraction. In this news, we highlight the recent capacity-building program for artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) in Zimbabwe, as part of the AfricaMaVal project. Focused on promoting responsible extraction, this program provided practical training to ASMers, addressing key challenges and opportunities in the sector. In Ecuador, the Shuar Arutam Maikiuants community is one of the few remaining communities resisting the mega-mining project of the Canadian company Solaris Copper Inc. and rejecting the company's attempt to corrupt them. Solaris has violated the Shuar Arutam people's right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) and has used a divide-and-conquer approach by building an alliance with the Yawi and Warints communities to manufacture consent. “The company took advantage of the conditions and needs of these communities to advance its operations, and in this way, the other 45 communities are at risk of being severely compromised by the environmental impacts of the project. The company now boasts a strategic alliance with Yawi and Warints as an example of ethical mining and successful community relations, but it’s a lie. It’s the same abuse of power and manipulation of the old colonial powers; it’s just more sophisticated.” - Nancy, a Maikiuants leader. Subcontracting regulations require that companies serving the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) must be locally based and have at least 51% ownership by Congolese citizens. According to Vis Reddy, chairman of SRK Consulting (South Africa) and Africa Lead for SRK Global, it is import distributing the benefits of mining to local businesses and communities. “This process strengthened the local economic ecosystem on which mining relies, while also building the local skills base and diversifying industrial activity – enhancing mining’s contribution to long-term sustainability,” says Reddy. The Madina Foulbé permit is approximately 27km directly west of the Sadiola Gold Mine and close to several other Tier 1 deposits (Loulo, Gounkoto, Fekola) in the gold belt known as Kédougou-Kéniéba Inlier (KKI). Two operators within the KKI have recently been acquired, including Chesser Resources purchased by Fortuna Silver Mines in May 2023 for USD60-million (860koz @ 1.77 g/t Au) and Oklo Resources purchased by B2Gold in May 2022 for USD66-million (668koz @ 1.83 g/t Au). Despite challenges Senegal remains one of the most stable countries in Africa. The three political alternations since independence in 1960 have all been peaceful. Earlier this year the country elected its fifth president in an election initially scheduled for the 25th of February but was eventually postponed to 24 March. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the opposition candidate, won the first round with a majority of votes. The new government must now navigate without a majority in parliament, which by law cannot be dissolved before August 2024. together we can - stop mercury in artisanal mining
This year the planetGOLD Uganda 🇺🇬 project has been meeting with artisanal miners across #Uganda to understand mercury use across the country. What they’re hearing: while miners are beginning to implement health and safety measures, alternatives to mercury aren’t widely used. Learn more about Kayonza mine site in Central Uganda 👇 https://lnkd.in/gSeqQYVH The planetGOLD Uganda project is supported by the Global Environment Facility, led by UN Environment Programme, executed by IMPACT, in partnership with MEMD Uganda and NEMA Uganda.

The African National Groundwork Databases (ANGD) tool developed by the British Geological Survey (BGS) represents a significant step forward in harnessing Africa's geological potential. By consolidating and standardizing geological data across the continent, the tool empowers stakeholders with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions and drive sustainable development in the mining sector. The ANGD tool's impact extends beyond economic growth, as it fosters collaboration, capacity building, and regional cooperation among African countries. With the ANGD tool, Africa is poised to unlock its vast mineral resources and pave the way for a prosperous future. The AYPW's vision of a strong database for Africa is directly aligned with the goals of the African National Groundwork Databases tool. By harnessing the power of reliable data, the AYPW seeks to empower young leaders and activists to engage effectively in water-related challenges. This approach will not only enhance their understanding of the issues but also enable them to advocate for informed policies and sustainable solutions. #water #database #wypw #aypw #groundwater #britishgeologicalsurvey
