🌱 It's always nice to receive photos of the projects and to add them to our impact platform so that our members can enjoy updates and so that impact a little further away also becomes tangible. 🇵🇪 In this example, DCBB, a member of ours, gave T-shirts to all the planters at the project as gifts and we see a picture at the nursery of our reforestation project in Baltimori, Peru. 🤔 How do we work? Seeds are first collected in the nearby forests. When the seeds have grown into little plants, the plants are stored safely. Then, they go through a process of hardening, so that they have a higher survival rate. At Nordkalk, we support biodiversity, one flower at a time. In June, we sowed the seeds of change at our Karinu quarry in Estonia, and today, we can admire the colourful results of our labour!   Earlier this year, Liisa Pert, our HSE Manager, joined forces with Gediminas Skvernys from Nordkalk Baltics and Clint White from our parent company SigmaRoc plc to plant a beautiful flower meadow. The idea? To turn recultivated areas into vibrant habitats for pollinators like bees and to help preserve biodiversity. Already in August, the meadow was thriving, with flowers blooming and insects buzzing! Some of these flowers are even perennial, so we’re hopeful they’ll return next year. Biodiversity is something we do in all the countries where Nordkalk operates. Some of the ground we covered in the podcast: Early Days of Mongabay: 🌳 My decision to start the website was carefully planned rather than a risky leap, beginning as a side gig to a job with a paying salary. I recommend exploring passion projects while maintaining one’s current job to better ensure financial security. 🌳 I talk about the importance of careful financial planning and savings from a young age, recounting my experience managing a pet store in my teens. Balancing Passion and Practicality: 🌳 Transitioning to a non-profit model required me to give up most reporting and take on roles I wasn’t initially skilled at, like management and fundraising. 🌳 It’s important to have a broad, long-term vision and align with audiences interested in making an impact through donations. Support and Recognition: 🌳 My grandmother was my biggest supporter, emotionally and practically. It took my parents several years to accept my career choice after seeing external recognition and success. 🌳 External accolades played a crucial role in validating my career path to family and peers. Conservation Journalism Challenges: 🌳 It can be difficult to pitch conservation stories to mainstream newsrooms, which often prioritize climate change, disasters, and energy topics. 🌳 Environmental degradation is broadening the audience for conservation news. Impact of Environmental Degradation: 🌳 I talk about revisiting places from my childhood; both the devastation and resilience of certain ecosystems. 🌳 I’ve seen significant changes, like the disappearance of insects and quieter forests. Future Outlook for Journalism: 🌳 I believe original journalism will become even more critical as the world becomes inundated with AI-generated content. 🌳 But I am concerned about the public’s ability to discern real from fake news and whether people will continue to care about facts over what conforms to their worldview. Advice for Aspiring Conservationists: 🌳 It’s important to understand your strengths, the landscape of opportunities, and being realistic about the effort required to succeed.

Do you know the difference between recovery and diversity species? 🌳 Recovery tree species, like the urucum-da-mata, grow quickly and have crowns that cover larger areas. species used for diversity grow more slowly and have smaller crowns, like the peroba. Both types of species are critical to ecological succession, in which regions classified as low productivity are gradually regenerated, as in the Belo Horizonte Project in Potiraguá, southern Bahia. With over 85 species native to the Atlantic Forest, 12 for recovery and 73 for diversity, including 15 with high potential for carbon removal, we exceeded the target by working with collectors and growers to train them and monitor their work in the field. They must use their local ecological knowledge to sustain themselves and seek diversified livelihoods in a changing world fraught with inequity. It becomes evident that the connection they nurture with the sea is not merely for sustenance, but a sincere cultural and spiritual bond that ultimately leads to stewardship through advocacy and activism.
