SAF mandate approved! ✈️🌍 The UK has taken a significant step forward in its journey toward net-zero with the approval of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate by the House of Commons. The order was laid before the house in July 2024 and now needs to be approved by the House of Lords before becoming a law! This SAF mandate is set to transform aviation by requiring a minimum of 10% of jet fuel to come from sustainable sources by 2030. The UK has finally set out its plans for a sustainable aviation fuel mandate, just eight months before compulsory SAF blending is due to start in both the UK and EU. Key legislation to drive domestic SAF production is still missing, but at least the demand picture has more clarity. The UK will need around 230,000 metric tons (76 million gallons) of SAF next year when its SAF blending mandate will start, at the same 2% share of airline fuel demand as the EU's. That will rise steadily to 10% by 2030 — far in excess of the EU's 6% — and to 22% by 2040 when UK SAF volumes will need to reach 2.9 million tons (4.4 billion gallons) based on government demand forecasts. UK Announces Mandatory 10% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030! ✈️ Great news for sustainable aviation! The Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom has confirmed a mandate requiring all departing flights to use 10% SAF by 2030. This mandate will see minimum UK SAF demand grow from around 240kt per year in 2025 to 1,200kt per year by 2030. In addition, the UK government will mandate PtL SAF (eSAF) starting at 0.2% in 2028. 👏 UK Mandate PtL Highlights: 📌 PtL (eSAF) mandate to begin in 2028 at 0.2% of total jet fuel demand, increasing to 0.5% in 2030 and 3.5% in 2040. 📌 Buy-out mechanism guidance is included in the mandate, benefiting suppliers and consumers. We are inspired to see the UK government's commitment to the development of PtL fuels, which achieve ~100% GHG emissions reductions, and are a vital part of the UK's aviation decarbonisation strategy. Globally announced sustainable aviation fuel production capacity significantly increased last year, driven by regulatory developments such as #ReFuelEU, the new UK SAF mandate and incentives to support SAF uptake in the US. Additionally, other countries, particularly in Asia, are looking to introduce mandates and targets for production, leading SAF to increasingly be seen as a global tradeable commodity with emerging trade corridors involving the US, SE Asia, Europe and South America, says SkyNRG’s latest annual SAF Market Outlook. Voluntary demand signals have also continued to strengthen, with multiple airlines, cargo companies and corporates setting ambitious SAF targets. Consultation regarding the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Revenue Certainty Mechanism published today, closing 20th June 2024. https://lnkd.in/d3ZVJBnF Options for the mechanism are: - Guaranteed strike price (GSP) – guarantees an agreed price per litre of fuel produced to SAF producers who choose to apply to the scheme, (similarities to low carbon electricity contracts for difference). - Buyer of last resort (BOLR) – a counterparty steps in to purchase SAF certificates when the market price falls below an agreed level. Thereby guaranteeing an agreed minimum price for the producer’s SAF certificates redeemed through the SAF Mandate. - Mandate auto-ratchet (MAR) – the Mandate (and its HEFA cap) adjusts when there is an oversupply in the market, to bring the price of SAF back closer to the buy-out price. - Mandate floor price (MFP) – a minimum price for certificates which is universally applied through the Mandate itself (in addition to the buyout price).

As per the mandates set by the EU, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) must be blended into aviation fuel at a rate of 6% by 2030, out of which 1.2% must be synthetic SAF (e-SAF). 🫧✈️ By 2050, the mandatory blending rate of SAF will rise to 70%, with e-SAF accounting for 35%. SAF synthesized from carbon and green hydrogen is called synthetic SAF or e-SAF. Transport and Environment, Europe’s leading NGO for cleaner transport, announced that the Final Investment Decisions regarding 25 production facilities and 20 pilot projects for e-SAF production in Europe have yet to be declared. 💷 Demand for SAF in the European aviation sector will skyrocket over the coming decades. However, the market’s current supply capacity is woefully short of catering to this demand.
