This week, the SS&M Mexican team worked hand in hand with the Corporate Logistics and Supply Chain team to identify improvement opportunities to be executed during FY25. As with every time we conduct this event, a large list of ideas was generated, capturing data on the current state, future state, implementation dates, and next steps for each one. However, what stood out in this process was the methodology used. After several years of carrying out these initiatives, we now have a mature team that understands the process and knows where the opportunities will be. This synergy allows us to evaluate easily the feasibility of the ideas and calculate not only the savings but also the workload required to achieve them. I want to thank each participant in this event, and at the same time I want to congratulate the team on this example of teamwork between different internal and corporate areas. You have already identified nearly 70% of your target, and there are still many ideas left to quantify. We will meet again for a 2nd Round to go the extra mile and identify more opportunities beyond what was expected. The process is called Continuous Improvement, and it flows smoothly when you have a strong group of CI Thinkers! In 1972, the Kobe shipyards in Japan marked a pivotal moment in design history. Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno pioneered the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to design an oil tanker, focusing on embedding customer satisfaction into the service offering before production even began. Before QFD, quality control methods were reactive, primarily addressing issues during or after production. This proactive approach changed the game, ensuring that potential problems were identified and addressed early in the design process. By the mid-1980s, Don Clausing of MIT introduced QFD to the United States, where it found classic applications in industries like automotive design. Clausing recounts an instance where an engineer wanted to place the emergency hand brake of a sports car between the seat and the door. However, customer feedback revealed that women drivers wearing skirts found this placement inconvenient. Thanks to QFD, this potential dissatisfaction was identified, and the design was improved. The legacy of QFD continues to impact various industries, ensuring that customer needs and satisfaction remain at the forefront of design and production. #ExcellenceWithMohan

Thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of our 4th High Level Value Stream Mapping & Strategic Layout Planning event this week, hosted in Holland, Michigan. Over a decade ago, we pioneered these integrated exercises at Adient's Seat Structures and Mechanisms plants in Mexico. In the past 6 months alone, we've extended this workshop to multiple facilities across the USA. While each implementation has addressed distinct objectives such as Material Flow enhancement, Workload Balance Optimization, End Of Production for flagship programs, and plant consolidation, the methodology remains consistently effective, delivering the anticipated outcomes. Beyond the substantial savings and identified benefits, our focus remains steadfast on refining and optimizing our transformation processes. Germany’s days as an industrial superpower are coming to an end, opined Bloomberg on 10 February. The media firm blames competition from the USA, the energy crisis and declining Chinese interest in German products for this development, but there are further factors to consider. Really good to see that the Deming philosophy is alive (if not widely flourishing) in the form of the Deming Prize. First set up in 1951 by the Union of Japanese Scientists & Engineers (JUSE). It can be seen as the ultimate recognition of a companies approach to quality in the widest sense (supplying what the customer wants with minimum variation). in the late 40 's & early 50's Deming spent time in post WW2 Japan as part of America's admirable exercise in getting Japan back on its feet. Deming & his teachings inspired Japanese business build a quality culture to produce products that captured American & western automotive & electrical markets from the 1970's onwards. This was documented in the NBC investigation "If Japan Can, Why Can't We?" in 1980. Deming is not widely known or widely understood in western business culture. IMO this is a tragic lost opportunity as his philosophy forms the basis of best management practice in every business, every sector, every market. Every time. It is that powerful.Watching the NBC investigation is a good start to appreciate what Deming is all about.

In a major move, EU antitrust regulators conducted surprise raids on tyre industry leaders #Pirelli, #Continental, 3Michelin, and #Nokian, triggering a notable decline in their shares. The European Commission, responsible for imposing competition rules in the EU, revealed the investigation without disclosing specifics in line with its usual protocol.   Pirelli, maintaining its innocence, assured full cooperation with authorities. Continental confirmed the investigation at its German offices, while Michelin stressed its commitment to compliance with competition rules. #NokianTyres, headquartered in Finland, acknowledged the raid, and pledged cooperation. The focus of the investigation centers on potential price coordination, including through public communications, concerning new replacement tyres for vehicles in the European Economic Area.
