📢 Meet the highly qualified #iFACT_MP team! Part 5 – University of Pisa 🎯 The University of Pisa is one of the oldest European Universities with a long-standing tradition in #aeronautics and #space. 🌍 The Aerospace Division of the Department of Industrial and Civil Engineering and the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry (DCCI) are directly involved in this project. DICI and DCCI have collaborated for more than five years at the development of an iodine propellant management system for electric propulsion applications, through the a past ESA Action. 💡 As part of the goals in this project, DCCI and DICI will develop an iodine mass flow meter based on laser spectrophotometric techniques to perform instantaneous measurements of the iodine mass flow rate during the thruster operation. The process for measuring the mass flow rate is completely non-invasive and easily scalable, so it can be readily used to assess the mass flow rate of corrosive substances like iodine in a harsh environment, such as the one present within the test chamber of EP systems. 📬 Stay tuned for more information and to meet the entire consortium! Did you know ice build-up on aircraft wings can dramatically change airflow?❄️🧊✈️ When ice forms, smooth (laminar) airflow may turn turbulent, increasing drag and reducing efficiency. 🎓 In his PhD project, Michele Picciolo uses wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations to investigate laminar-turbulent transition when ice is present. By studying the rough surface created by ice🧊〰 ❄️, the goal is to improve predictions and design safer, more efficient aircraft. 🤝 In collaboration with ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, Technische Universität Braunschweig, and Dassault Aviation, this research aims to make flying greener and more reliable, even in icy conditions. #TRACES_DNJD #MSCA #DNJD EU Science, Research and Innovation #science4all #ScienceCommunication #3MT

Why is ice crystal icing a problem for aircraft engines?🧊✈️ Ice crystal icing occurs when an aircraft engine takes in tiny solid ice crystals from the atmosphere❄️. Once inside the engine, the ice crystals may damage the compressor blades, disrupt the combustion process, and reduce engine efficiency. 🎓During his PhD project at Technische Universität Braunschweig and ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, in collaboration with GE Aerospace, Pavlos Stratakos experimentally investigates how ice crystals behave within the engine, including how they adhere to surfaces🧊⛆. 🎯By identifying the conditions that lead to ice build-up, the research aims to develop solutions to prevent or reduce the impact of ice crystal icing, ultimately making aircraft engines safer and more efficient. #TRACES_DNJD #MSCA #DNJD EU Science, Research and Innovation #science4all #ScienceCommunication #3MT

🌍✈️ This month, four of our doctoral candidates had the pleasure of attending the EASN - European Aeronautics Science Network international conference. Following this year's theme “Innovation in Aviation and Space Towards Sustainability Today & Tomorrow”, the European research community showcased the latest advancements in aerospace. Our team contributed by presenting on the following research questions: 🔬 What is the role of the polymer matrix in composite fatigue? 📐 What are the limitations in the preliminary design of large-scale thin-walled structures when using shear panel theory, and how can we overcome them? 🛩️ What is the influence of distributed electric propulsion on the fatigue behaviour of wings? 🔍 How can we use robots to efficiently examine composite hydrogen pressure tank structures for defects during manufacturing? We want to thank the EASN - European Aeronautics Science Network for organising an inspiring event and for facilitating scientific discussions that pave the way towards a more sustainable future. We are looking forward to next year’s conference! From left to right: Martin Schubert (DLR), Lukas Kettenhofen (SLA), Helena Heuser (SLA), Dr.-Ing. Athanasios Dafnis (Lecturer at SLA), Moritz Baess (SLA), Tobias Schalm (SLA) #EASN #EASN2024 #Thessaloniki

DESIRE - Preparation to the Einstein-Elevator levels for a first test flight The project DESIRE (Dark energy search by atom interferometry in the Einstein-Elevator) searches for dark energy based on the chameleon field theory. To measure this weak force, an atom interferometer with a special test mass is used. The test mass accelerates the atoms periodically so that the force can be detected based on the phase of the atoms. DESIRE is currently being prepared to the levels of the Einstein-Elevator for a first test flight. This involves testing the 3D-MOT for the 5g acceleration of the elevator and investigating the influence of microgravity. DESIRE is a collaboration between the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) and Humboldt-Universität Berlin (HUB).

Congratulations to our student Irene Valles Sánchez for securing the ST3LLAR "Grant for Young Researchers UC3M-SENER Aerospace Chair"! 🏆 The grant will support the completion of her Bachelor Thesis "Analysis of magnetized plumes in electrodeless plasma thrusters", under the supervision of Eduardo Ahedo. 🚀 Irene's research will focus on a new generation of innovative plasma thrusters that rely on electromagnetic radiation into a neutral gas to produce plasma. The primary element under study is magnetically guided plumes for plasma acceleration, employing magnetic nozzles. The project involves developing a numerical model to analyze plasma acceleration and propulsion performance, along with a global and compact model for particle and energy balances. 💡 The UC3M-SENER Aerospace chair ST3LLAR is a collaboration signed in March 2018 between the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Sener Aeroespacial to support educational and research activities related to the development of aerospace technology for satellites and spacecraft. #ElectricPropulsion #grant #aerospace #womeninstem #womeninengineering

Director of Manufacturing at VH Metalurgica | Control and Automation Engineering | Master’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering | PhD Student at University of Seville
I'm glad to share the paper resulting from the collaboration with PhD. Anderson Szejka from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, and Fernando MAS, PhD and PhD. Maria José Escalona Cuaresma, from Universidad de Sevilla, Grupo ES3 (Engineering and Science for Software Systems), Airbus Defence and Space, Mecanizados y Montajes Aeronáuticos and THE CT ENGINEERING GROUP. The aerospace manufacturing industry faces significant complexity, with advanced technology, limited production runs, and a high level of customization. Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) are emerging as a solution to reduce errors and improve efficiency throughout the manufacturing process. My recent research explores the current use of CPPS in the aerospace sector, focusing on the integration of Knowledge Data-Driven (KDD) methods to support manufacturing processes, especially for Aerospace Sheet Metal (ASM) parts. This study offers an initial overview of research trends and the role of CPPS in advancing aerospace production. So, if you are interested in this area, feel free to read! #Ontology #Aerospace #Manufacturing #Knowledge https://lnkd.in/ePKcYtCJ
