Creating a "sense of place" in our public spaces means imbuing them with a uniqueness that attracts people (and, to be ruthlessly practical for a moment, revenue). This is because well-designed outdoor spaces become destinations.
In North America, our wide-open strip malls and multi-lane roadways not only look like every other North American city, but they just look like somewhere you don't want to be.
It may seem easy for European cities with hundreds of years of architectural history to achieve a sense of place, but there are many ways to accomplish this if you follow a few underlying principles:
- Create an outdoor "room" surrounded by low- to mid-rise buildings and/or trees.
- Provide multiple ways to access the space.
- Provide something to look at or do once you get there, like interact with artwork or have a meal.
- Make it walkable.
- Above all, make it unique.
The whole story is contained in this video, and it contains some concepts I think we should be applying in Canada and the US: https://buff.ly/49uBrT2#urbanplanning#publicspaces

I can't remember where this building is, but I love the boldness of the colour. Does this help a building as an investment? Does it help the functioning of it for its users? Does it add to the urban landscape? Financially this might be demonstrable; the other issues are subjective and perhaps depend on the audience, the climate, the local culture and the local temperament. Personally I think colour adds something to life and to our urban fabric. What do you think?

Described as New Urbanism Lite, the Mills of Miami demonstrated the Nadi Group’s ability to design traditional neighborhood features within a conventional context. The Miami Township enthusiastically welcomed the design which incorporated single family housing and higher density town homes.

Based on natural reflexes and reaction times, classic streets rely on the awareness and consciousness of people in the road to manage circumstances.
Classic street design adopts the "design speed of humans," in which people operate safely and consciously.
