We're thrilled to share that our talented engineers at Cundall Poland recently presented at the prestigious PLEA Conference, held in Wrocław, Poland. The PLEA Association promotes sustainable architecture and urban design worldwide through conferences, workshops, and publications, uniting professionals, academics, and students from over 40 countries. Our presentation tackled one of the most pressing issues of our time: the role of the built environment in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Martyna Wodo and Andrzej Kaczmarek analysed Passive House Standard (PHS) buildings in Poland, revealing increased future cooling demands, overheating risks, and potential limitations in window ventilation methodology. The findings from the study underscore the importance of designing resilient, energy-efficient buildings that can adapt to the changing climate while maintaining occupant comfort. It also highlights the limitations in overheating methodology that designers should consider at the early design stage to avoid thermal comfort issues. We in the Caribbean, in particular, face extreme climate risks due to our exposed location, relative isolation, and small size. We are already bearing the brunt of these climate disruptions as evidenced by the catastrophic events experienced over the past 10 years. Our regional counterpart, Architectural Designer ALYSSA-AMOR GIBBONS, delivers this beautiful and insightful TED Talk about the effects of climate change in her country and how using traditional design concepts and working with nature can create resilience against the impacts of the climate. “As a region, we really need to depart from this more global convention of designing our buildings to close themselves off from nature. So that architecture for us becomes less about the external expression, aesthetic and shape of the building but more about its holistic performance in concert with the environment.” 💎 What are some examples in the Caribbean of taking traditional design and adapting it to modern approaches that work to mitigate climate change impacts? https://lnkd.in/eEcDGsDJ #stagesgroup #architecture #CaribbeanDesign #climateresilientdesign

A case of ruining architecture to achieve climate comfort in a post by Stefan Bürger. See Post Link Below: https://lnkd.in/dJW8Uhzq In the pursuant of climate comfort we cannot ruin historic architecture without responsible consideration to environmental impact and historic preservation. There is already a smarter choice in existance which provides a sustainable solution in implimenting energy-efficiency for historic architecture. In the case of the Görlitz Distric Office, this 300 micron reflective membrane - ClimateCoating with endothermic and dehuminification propertise would have effectively improved the climate condition without tampering with the historic architecture. As we delve into our dialogue with Nick Yannakis from Beca, one fundamental question arises; "Whether through new construction or the adaptive reuse of existing structures, what strategies can we employ to create energy-efficient aquatic facilities?" Achieving a harmonious balance in each building's carbon efficiency is key to ensuring the long-term success of our wellness, aquatic, and leisure facilities. Nick summed it up perfectly; "its about more people, more active, more often!"
