Week-long German rail strike to spill across Northern Europe German rail workers are amidst a week-long nationwide strike over working conditions and pay disputes with Deutsche Bahn. The strike, called by the GDL union, involves locomotive drivers and transport sector employees, causing disruptions in Germany's inland freight transport. Hapag-Lloyd anticipates rail freight delays impacting ship handling in German ports. While the Port of Hamburg Marketing expects no major restrictions, the European Rail Freight Association warns of significant consequences for the broader North Europe network, describing the strike as "disproportionate" and causing financial damage along the critical Rhine-Alpine rail corridor connecting Rotterdam and Milan. https://lnkd.in/dBPZmKfY

Another transport strike: Another challenge for the logistics industry Germany has been shaken by a wave of strikes since the beginning of the year. The ongoing strikes in rail and air transport in particular are a major burden for the logistics sector. And an end is not yet in sight - several wage disputes are still open at Lufthansa, which could lead to further strikes, and the train drivers' announced intermittent strike strategy in particular poses new challenges for the logistics industry. Germany is the hub for freight transport in Europe. Six out of ten European rail freight corridors run through Germany, and two thirds of the trains operated by the largest rail freight provider in Germany cross at least one national border. After a freight transport strike, it takes several days to weeks before the entire train network is stable again. In the meantime, there are backlogs, especially at ports, as there are no trains to bring the containers to the ports or pick them up from there and transport them onwards. This has already led to considerable delays in the supply chain and even complete production stoppages in various industries during previous strikes. So far, however, the strikes have been announced early enough so that it has been possible to switch to other means of transport and set up an emergency timetable, at least in most cases. The train drivers' new strike strategy, which means that strikes will only be announced at very short notice (less than 48 hours in advance), is intended to prevent this possibility. This poses unprecedented challenges for the logistics sector, as the complex handling of intermodal transport chains requires a certain lead time, which cannot be guaranteed in the event of sudden strikes. We are monitoring the situation closely and remain available to our customers to minimize the impact on their supply chains. By flexibly adapting our operations and increasing the use of alternative transportation options, we are striving to maintain service quality and ensure customer satisfaction. #mgc #logistics #transportstrike

“A one-week strike on October 1 would lead to large congestion problems into mid-November, according to Sea-Intelligence, while a two-week strike would mean ports would not get back to normal operations until 2025.” 96% of local 514 votes in favor of a strike. If you aren’t diverting freight in the short term it would be wise to examine alternate ports. #portlogistics #internationallogistics #splash247 #logimark #arcglobal #containerlogistics #oceanfreight

On March 11, in order to strive for improved working conditions, about 7,000 freight workers represented by the main unions launched a strike for about two weeks across Finland as planned, covering areas including freight, transportation control, seaports and railway transportation. Later, they may have adverse effects on the European steel market. The strike is expected to directly affect logistics facilities and infrastructure, causing trouble not only to Finland, but may also spread to the entire Europe. Two major European steelmakers, Outokumpu and SSAB, have warned that the strike could have a negative impact on their businesses. During the strike, all export ports in Finland will be closed for about two weeks. SSAB estimates that the strike may reduce business in Europe by about 300 million kronor in the first quarter.

⚠ German Port Workers Strike to Press for Better Wages: What You Need to Know The German trade union ver.di has initiated ‘warning strikes’ at German sea ports ahead of the fourth round of negotiations with the Central Association of German Seaport Operators (ZDS). These strikes threaten to disrupt port operations significantly. 📅 Strike Schedule: Hamburg: All-day strikes from the first to the third shift, spanning yesterday and today. Bremerhaven: Full-shift strikes from the second shift yesterday to the first shift today. Emden: Full-shift strikes today, ending at around 10 pm. Bremen: Strikes during the first shift today, from 6 am to 2 pm. Wilhelmshaven: Strikes from the first shift today through the first shift tomorrow. 🚢 Impact on Shipping: Maersk has informed its customers that affected vessels at Hamburg and Bremerhaven will "observe the duration of the strike and recover the impact when service resumes fully". Past warning strikes have led to significant congestion for the delivery and pick-up of containers, and similar effects are anticipated this time. 🛑 Union Demands: Ver.di is calling for a €3 per hour wage increase for port workers starting 1 June 2024, along with increased shift bonuses. This includes compensating for the lack of a shift bonus increase in the 2022 agreement, over a period of 12 months. 🗣 Union and Employer Statements: Ver.di: The union has emphasized the seriousness of their demands, highlighting the substantial turnout at strikes in Hamburg and Bremerhaven. ZDS: The employers' association has urged moderation in exercising the right to strike, citing constructive negotiations and a fair offer already on the table. 📊 Historical Context: Two years ago, similar talks led to warning strikes that paralyzed ports for around 80 hours. The current escalation aims to send a strong signal to employers about the urgency of meeting the workers' demands. 📍 Upcoming Negotiations: The fourth round of collective bargaining between ver.di and ZDS is scheduled for 11 and 12 July in Bremen. The outcome of these talks will be crucial for future port operations and labor relations in the German seaport industry. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of these negotiations and the impact of the ongoing strikes. #PortStrikes #Logistics #SupplyChain #GermanSeaports #verdi #ZDS #MaritimeIndustry

German airports reach agreement to end strike action #Airport operators in #Germany have agreed on a deal with security staff after a series of strikes at some of the country's biggest airports. The German trade union Verdi has made a pay agreement covering some 25,000 security staff to avert more strike action. A dispute with airports has led to a series of strikes at some of Germany's busiest hubs, with a large number of flights canceled on numerous strike days. The agreement comes after an arbitration process that was launched on Friday at a secret location. What we know so far Verdi had said it would not call for any further work stoppages by security service providers until the end of the arbitration process. Committees of the BDLS employers' association and the union have until noon on Tuesday to accept or reject the arbitration recommendation. BDLS said the recommendation stipulated wage increases of between 13.1% and 15.1% within 15 months. Verdi negotiator Wolfgang Pieper said the issues being tackled included salary increases and bonuses for trainers and managers. Demands for higher wages amid stubborn inflation have led to a series of disruptive and costly stoppages affecting air and #rail travel in Europe's largest economy. The strikes paralyzed 11 airports across Germany and affected air #traffic in early and mid-March. Last month, the airline Lufthansa and Verdi reached a wage deal for ground staff at German airports, averting potential Easter holiday strikes. That followed months of strike action at German airports which saw the mass cancellation of flights. https://lnkd.in/e7-ZVHak
