Yay! It's Work in the Wild Wednesday! A special day (according to me) when I get to celebrate brands I've had the opportunity to work with over the years do their thing. This is a nonprofit direct mail piece from Houses of Hope that encourages readers to support them through Give to Lincoln Day. My favorite things about this direct mail piece that work are: 1) The first-class stamp got to me faster than using a nonprofit bulk stamp. 2) My first name and Tammy Stevenson's signature are handwritten. 3) There's a reply envelope inside :) 4) The short paragraphs and strategic bolding made it an easy read. 5) Words that speak directly to the reader like "you" and "your" are used. Houses of Hope provides expertise and guidance to help people find their own way to successfully manage their substance use and mental health during recovery. Realizing that mental health issues can impact anyone of us - directly or indirectly- is a first step toward caring. A second step is taking action to help others. Supporting programs that provide hands on help to people and families struggling with the aftermath of something so traumatic as suicide is a great way to connect caring with action. #MentalHealthAwareness

Tomorrow is World Social Work day, which makes me reflect on why I chose to train as a social worker in the late 1990's but also why I chose to working in the charity sector. There seems to be so much trauma in the field of social work and I hear so many stories of good SW's leaving the profession due to experiencing their own secondary trauma - so I thought I'd share this webinar link from Community Care. This journey is deeply personal, rooted in my own challenges with mental health. Honesty and transparency are the cornerstones of our mission, creating a space free of judgment. In the realm of mental health advocacy, the power of shared experiences cannot be overstated. Opening up about my own struggles has been both cathartic and empowering, allowing me to connect on a profound level with those we aim to support. It's a reminder that vulnerability can be a source of strength. Our nonprofit is a testament to the transformative impact that honesty can have. By shedding light on the shadows of mental health, we strive to dismantle stigma and create a supportive community. Every step we take is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Navigating the complexities of mental health advocacy requires unwavering dedication. Challenges are inevitable, but they are met with an unyielding commitment to our cause. The soul-enriching nature of this work lies in the lives touched, stories shared, and the hope rekindled.

It is paramount that nonprofit organizations and schools serving east-side KC understand the condition that many of their families are in. I know they get tired of parent's lack of engagement or inconsistency. I know they get frustrated when parents fail to communicate or follow through on expectations. But we must understand our community has suffered extensive trauma. Many families are in a state of survival, with their days defined by constant and recurring crises. They are exploding unintentional trauma responses on the regular, and in some manner simply trapped in a fight, flight, freeze or fawn state of being. Their capacity to add any extra thing to their plate is simply not available. Even if it would benefit themselves of their children, they can't see outside of the overwhelm of the moment right in front of them. Many providers say that "the parents are the problem," but maybe the problem is our service providers lack of understanding: 1. The culture of poverty and how it encases and influences families 2. The extent of how trauma has impacted and wired their systems of being 3. How to appropriately create safety, secure belonging and support families through authentic relationships to rewire their systems of survival Maybe if we didn't write off parents as "stuck in their ways" and helped them see the origin of "their ways," these parents would be able to create new ways for themselves and their children to thrive. #communitydevelopment #mentalhealthawareness #eastsidekc

Few factors are more critical to a child’s well-being than the consistent presence of caring adults in their lives and a physically and emotionally safe environment. We recently distributed $145,000 in grants to nonprofits who are walking alongside local families with supportive services. From building community for single parents, to family mental health care, to birthing classes and post-partum care, these grants create a strong foundation for local children and families. https://lnkd.in/gB4WZtHT
