In Australian households, there are more than 300 identified languages spoken, with more than one-fifth of Australians speaking a language other than English. Culturally diverse learners can face a range of barriers like - a lack of teaching materials in languages other than English - inconsistent access to education and/or teaching materials, and - a lack of cultural awareness or representation in the teaching materials. Descriptor 1.3 of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) outlines what criteria professional learning undertaken to support culturally diverse learners should meet. That's a wrap to The Oxford/QFI Forum, Research to Practice: Teaching Arabic in Schools 🙌 We had a great few days in Oxford gathering a diverse group of researchers, teachers, and policymakers to discuss and set priorities for the future of Arabic language research in primary and secondary schools. A total of 31 themes emerged from a priority-setting survey that was shared prior to the Forum. The most prominent themes include: ➀ Multiglossia: Challenges and strategies associated with teaching in multilingual settings. ➁ Pedagogy: Effective teaching methods and approaches. ➂ Affective Filters: Psychological and emotional barriers that affect learning. ➃ Curriculum: The need for improved materials and resources. ➄ Assessment: Development and implementation of effective assessments. ➅ Heritage Learners: Strategies for teaching students who are learning the language of their heritage. Attendees divided into groups to discuss these themes in the form of research questions, prioritizing them based on perceived importance and impact on classroom practice. This resulted in 10 priority research questions that we hope will contribute to the dearth of research on teaching Arabic in schools. After the Forum, attendees are invited to collaborate to engage in action research in primary/secondary schools to help bridge the gap between research and practice. A huge thank you to all who attended and to Department of Education, University of Oxford for your incredible support. We’re eager to see more research on teaching Arabic in schools taking place! #Research2Practice #TeachArabic #SpeakArabic #LearnArabic
