The latest working paper from the Centre for Community Child Health highlights the Core Care Conditions—the essential features of social and physical environments that are vital for optimal development and wellbeing. Why focus on Core Care Conditions? The earliest stages of life, from conception to age two, are crucial. The environments in which families live, the support they receive, and the access to essential services have a profound impact on both children and parents. What’s Next? We must focus on providing all families with the conditions they need to thrive. This includes strengthening social support networks, creating integrated child and family centres, and potentially introducing a universal early years guarantee. Let’s work together to ensure every child and family in Australia has the opportunity to thrive! I came across this impactful post from the Global Parenting Initiative and felt compelled to share the message about the transformative power of parenting interventions. These programmes are essential for fostering positive engagement and responsive caregiving, equipping parents and caregivers with the skills they need to build strong, loving relationships with their children. During my research in Peru during the pandemic, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of playful pedagogies shared by teachers with parents. These interactive and engaging methods not only enhanced learning but also created joyful, nurturing environments that were crucial for child development. This experience suggests that incorporating playful pedagogies into parenting strategies could be a valuable approach going forward. Empowering caregivers to connect deeply with their children is not just a personal victory; it's a societal one. Let’s continue to advocate for and implement these vital programmes, ensuring every parent has the support they need to thrive and every child can grow up in a loving, supportive environment. #Parenting #Empowerment #GlobalParentInitiative #StrongFamilies #PositiveEngagement #PlayfulParenting #ResearchInAction #Peru #PandemicResilience
👨👧👦 “I think I am going to be a good father because I learned to control my temper while disciplining.” A father from Uganda reflects on the transformative power of parenting interventions. These programmes are essential for fostering positive engagement and responsive caregiving. Empower fathers and all caregivers with the skills they need to build strong, loving relationships with their children. Together with partners, we call on governments, businesses, and other stakeholders to scale up parenting programmes with an enabling environment for playful parenting. Steph is a farmer, mother of three, and a psychologist. Her story of resilience highlights the importance of early support, self-compassion, and connection for every parent. It’s Farm Safety Week, an important time for rural parents to know that parenting support is available. A recent study found that women living in rural communities who had depression reported significantly higher parenting stress when compared to women living in metropolitan areas, and also reported lower access to parenting activities and supports. Free, evidence-based online parenting programs like Triple P Online for Baby can be a welcome support for new parents, especially in rural and remote areas. It can also empower parents to know when to seek further support, from their doctor or support groups like Gidget Foundation Australia. A new report has found which children in Australia are most likely to fall behind in reaching key developmental milestones. Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI)'s Centre for Community Child Health examined the data of 300,000 children, finding that being read to less at home was a strong indicator of developmental 'vulnerability' (measured when children started school). Other risk factors included lower household income, parents’ or carer’s education level, if a home was rented or overcrowded and whether a child experienced mental health issues. But the data also showed that unpaid childcare acted as a protective element for families living in disadvantage. MCRI Professor Sharon Goldfeld AM said governments should consider how this data could be better used to inform policy and decision making.
