This is one of the most interesting - and difficult - projects I've ever worked on. It was interesting because there aren't many opportunities to read patient feedback on vaccinations that isn't intended for wide public consumption (i.e. social media) and identify themes. We learned a lot about the frequency and type of barriers that gave people pause when considering COVID vaccination 💉 in 2021, and applied the insights to subsequent vaccination interventions to improve the behavioral logic model, user experience, and outcomes.
The project was difficult not just because of the high volume of qualitative data, but because those people who expressed very negative sentiments often did so in ways that were offensive or misguided. As someone who loves science and believes vaccines are miraculous, it hurt my heart to read some of the sentiments people texted.
But there were bright spots! Despite what might appear to be the case from news and social media, conspiracy theories and politically polarized attitudes weren't as prevalent as vaccine intentions. And anecdotally, as we've monitored replies to subsequent vaccine interventions, the vitriol seems lessened, and certainly for vaccines other than COVID-19.
Check out our insights in this new blog post (which includes a link to the full text peer review paper)!
What do unsolicited patient responses to #vaccination digital health interventions say? We read through 17,000 responses to COVID-19 vaccination texts and sorted through the good, the bad, and the ugly.
