TLDR: I launched a new podcast to answer the question: What do our elected officials actually do? Sometimes we sit on our ideas, but eventually, they come knocking at the door and can’t be ignored. Over the past decade, I’ve had a consistent feeling about civic education and engagement in our country, that the way we engage with our voting process and our elected officials is too shallow. Many of us, myself included, issue a huge amount of power to people we don’t know much about based on a few opinions or a party recommendation. Back in 2015 as I was watching the presidential election, I often wondered across the board if we were electing the right people for the positions, and regardless of how much we liked them, how would we know they were a good fit if we don’t understand the actual roles they will play in our local or national government?  This was the creation of SixtySecondDemocracy; a podcast designed to interview elected officials, from local mayors all the way up to presidents, with the express goal of finding out what they actually do in these roles. How do they function? What skills and experiences does one need to do these jobs? How are people held accountable? Each episode starts with a 60-second summary before the full episode. The first four episodes are two Mayors, of two different types of local government, a president of a board of education, and a sitting state senator. I hope you enjoy it!
