When I coach sales professionals on their first calls, it's amazing how they start so robotically and follow a straight line to their goal, whether a meeting or a demo. What I look for is a person who has a solid, confident intro and conversation starter. Then, do they LISTEN and ASK CURIOUS questions to build rapport, understanding, and a broader insight into their organizational priority or scope? Now, take that to your interviews...how well do they LISTEN and ASK CURIOUS questions during the interview, and see if they build rapport, understanding, and a broader insight into the priority or scope of the role? Then do they ask for the CLOSE, or do they ask you for the job? If they do, move them to the next round in the interview process. Hopefully, you don't just hire after one interview.
