Can we build a future that honors our past? 🤔 Our latest video reveals a remarkable example of historic preservation in action in Brussels. #GrowWithMonitoring #MonitoringSolutions Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon Jan De Nul Group
Preserving historic architecture is a privilege and a responsibility. At Jan De Nul Group, they understand this deeply. That's why they're utilising Leica Geosystems monitoring solutions in their construction work nearby Brussels' iconic South Palace built in the 1800s. This approach allows for the precise monitoring required to protect this historic building while advancing the city's subway infrastructure. Thank you, Jens Muylaert, for sharing insightful details about this fascinating project with us. Renowned French architect Dominique Perrault Architecture explores the evolution of Olympic villages, tracing their transformation from Barcelona to Paris. In this insightful discussion, he delves into the challenges, methodologies, and visionary approach shaping the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic villages. Expanding on key themes from his urban planning manual, Un Village et son Double (A Village and Its Double), Perrault examines the duality of these spaces—both as physical infrastructures and as catalysts for urban innovation. The book, available in both English and French on actar.com, offers a deeper analysis of how the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic villages redefine cities and their legacies. 📚Grab your copy of the book here: https://lnkd.in/d7Wvz9RN 💡 Check out the full interview done by urbanNext here: https://lnkd.in/d5CR_SHF Interview by Dima Fadel Filmed by Pol Gonzalez Film editing by Evgeniia Barashkova

A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to interview Dominique Perrault (Dominique Perrault Architecture) for urbanNext about his latest book "A Village and Its Double" (Actar Publishers, 2024). It was truly fascinating diving into the thought process behind designing an Olympic village, especially when considering its long-term impact—the "day-after" phase. As Paris rapidly expands beyond its traditional boundaries, it is increasingly becoming a key European hub. Alongside major projects like Grand Paris, Perrault's vision sheds light on the socio-political complexities of designing an Olympic city—and its "double"—with an eye toward the future. In the interview, Perrault draws compelling parallels between the Barcelona Olympic Village of 1992 and the Paris 2024 Games, highlighting key lessons learned from past experiences. His approach blends historical insight with current needs and technologies, which are reshaping the way we think Olympic and Paralympic village planning. As he put it, his urban planning manual is an open book—one that invites readers to explore it non-linearly, from start to finish or wherever curiosity leads them.

NEW RESEARCH – Simulaa, led by Andre Bonnice and Anna Jankovic, explores post-carbon paradigms for Australian architecture. Their study surveys exemplary projects and practices from across Northern Europe (EU member countries) where decarbonisation efforts in Energy, Waste, and Materials are being implemented on various scales and timelines. The research shows how particular strategies may affect the architectural industry here in Australia, in the hope that there is space for practitioners to take more ‘risks’ so we can implement changes to advance architecture, to be an agent for good, and to reckon with decarbonisation of the built environment. This project was supported by an Alastair Swayn Foundation International Research Grant. I'm such a huge fan of Leonardo da Vinci science and Goethe science! In the old days, engineers were holistic thinkers who had a huge fascinating for nature. Things like lifting heavy weights with leverage instead of heavy machines were normal because everything had to be done by hand. In my first job in the Amsterdam removal company we had a lot of that too. So, what would Leonardo say to modern architects? 1. Think as lightweight as possible 2. Think minimum materials 3. Think interconnection instead of solids 4. Think structure and shapes for function and beauty!

We still can do better: look at this: https://lnkd.in/eX4gwHKa This is a self-supporting structure that permanently stores the energy for future use. The structure is based solely on bending and friction, without fixed connections, identical to the Leonardo bridge.
