“And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption”
10 marathons; 10 countries; 10 months
From the blistering heat of Gran Canaria, through to the snow in Zurich, the madness of Filippide in which no tech was worn and no markers available, through to the immensity of Chicago. Runs that started at 4:30 am and 8:30 pm; the Midnight Sun and the Welsh weather; sideways rain in Edinburgh and cloudless skies in Riga.
It’s been a journey. It’s been epic. And it ends on Saturday.
My friends have supported throughout – looking after the kids, accompanying me around the distances, linking their own events to the fundraising team. Colleagues and clients have chipped in. Organisations such as MCFT, Eversheds Sutherland, Thrive Law and Evander have given generously. And so have the people I know across the various media platforms I use.
It’s 10 years since the charity I founded after Anna died came into existence. Since that moment we have raised £1,334,171. Approved 808 applications from families where a person faces cancer. Provided 2,907 counselling sessions. Supported 1,672 trips to hospital for poorly people and their families. Offered 3,352 childcare days when a parent is having treatment. Paid for 1,928 weeks of food support for families. Paid for 200 second opinions on Harley Street for patients requesting an additional brain on the case. We have funded 18 research projects at Brighton, Cardiff and Sheffield Universities.
This endeavour is the boldest of them all – to fund a second stage research project looking at the metastatic pathway and why some women with breast cancer respond well to treatment and others do not. The answer will prolong the lives of thousands. Women with rare breast cancers are a statistically small group but an incredibly important one. We are at £45,001 with Oslo to go. The target is £52,000. Can we get there? Will the final marathon herald a clinching of the fundraising?
If you can donate, that would be magical. If you can’t, just a simple like, comment or share of this post will broaden its reach and increase our chances of success.
Love and light
