Hiring Frank Elkins as CEO of Selco Builders Warehouse and GB Distribution for Grafton Group plc is a stunning acquisition! He is a true industry legend and a man of the upmost integrity. He will lead this business to even greater success, building on the excellent work of Howard Luft. If I were an executive at Stark and especially Travis Perkins I would now be very concerned. How many people will follow Frank out of the ones they have left who haven't joined John? How many customers will make the switch? How did Travis Perkins manage to lose so many good leaders? People like Frank, John Carter, and Kieran Griffin. Frank or Kieran could have been their next CEO. As I said in a post the other day, succession planning is vital to the success of a business. Of course, people leave companies for many different reasons. Some are pushed, others make the choice, wanting a new challenge in a new environment. For others it's a case of losing faith in the leadership above. Losing one of these great men is forgiveable, losing all three could be considered negligent. Frank was last years winner of the BMJ Industry Personality of the Year Award, sponsored by Wilson Brook Consulting. Will he now, in the years ahead, become the first person to win it twice? I have done loads of recruitment for Selco both in the 2000's, when they weren't so well known, and more recently. Wednesday Wisdom..... Striking out.... I'm a big baseball fan. I LOVE the New York Yankees. The other day, my buddy Dale Gossett asked me a question about sports agent Scott Boras. He wondered if I thought he was ruining baseball. Scott Boras is a famous sports agent known for his players not signing contract extensions and going into free agency and commanding top dollar. He's a true salesman. He "creates" value for his players and demands only the best terms for them regarding length of contract, total dollars and average annual value. My answer to his question was, "no". He's doing exactly what his clients want/need him to do. Now, don't get me wrong, I think many teams and myself see different valuations for his clients. Right now, he has 2 top tier pitchers left on the market. He hasn't been able to find a team that is willing to pay the asking price in terms of dollars and/or years for them. They are good players, but older and and the decline for length of contract. So does this mean he has struck out?? Of course not, his mission is to find the best deal for his client up to the last minute. This is the same in freight brokerage. There are lots of carriers out there right now fighting for freight. The supply appears to be greater than the demand. What are you doing to set yourself apart to be able to command top dollar for your services?? As a freight broker, you represent BOTH the carrier and the customer. You provide value to both. And in return, you keep a little bit. So how do your customers view you? Are you cheap? Are you transactional? Or, are you providing value-added services and worth extra pay? How do your carriers view you? Are you cheap? Do you take care of them when they do what's asked?
