Mobile money in Africa is changing.. let's trace the dots. Its aggressive growth is credited to lower transaction costs compared to traditional banking as well as accessibility of agents compared to bank branches. But it's also that the associated accounts/wallets , the Tier-1 , have less stringent onboarding KYC requirements. 💎 But these 2 factors are changing. 📌 I noted in a post last week (see link) that Regulators and major stakeholders are tightening the security noose on Mobile wallets to keep out bad actors. 📌 A few days ago , Uganda followed suit with the BoU requiring agents to verify National IDs for withdrawals over 1M shillings. ( see The PaymentLogue's post attached) 📌 To add to this, Kenya experienced their 1st dip in 16years! for Mobile Money transactions, attributed to the increased government duties on transactions. It won't be surprising if other African countries follow suit. So with increased checkpoints, and increasing fees - is the value prop for Mobile money slowly eroding? Thoughts? 📝 The post - https://lnkd.in/eMG2DXaT

CALLING ALL AFRICAN FINTECH INNOVATORS We need your input to help shape the Africa Fintech Platform to provide resources and facilitate networking to grow Africa’s fintech ecosystem. The Africa Fintech Network in partnership with Cenfri and the Africa Digital Financial Inclusion Facility (ADFI) are working to address these barriers by developing a digital platform that will enable fintech associations across Africa to pool knowledge and strengthen relationships and partnerships. To ensure the Africa Fintech Platform addresses the real needs of its users, we are conducting a needs assessment that includes the identification of needs and opportunities for female-led or female-owned fintechs. Your input will help us tailor the platform to support gender-inclusive innovation and empower fintech associations, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders.
