With Forest Rights Amendment Acts, lot has been in discussion over commercialisation of forests through safaris etc. Here is a glimpse of such actions in past. Earth Focus Kanha led by Vipul Gupta rectifying the story. Question is - what is the right way to conserve forests? At one end we ignore local communities or indigenous or tribal folks, because maybe we can, and then create laws for jungle safari to make mimicry of a forest and its residents. Earth Focus Kanha has been restoring lives of Gonds and other tribes in region around Kanha. Do remember this each time you go to visit Tiger Sanctuary. These folks paid the price for our holidays and entertainment. Can we contribute and reverse the trend now? Debadityo Sinha Yenderpiti Rao Ashish Kothari Shrishtee Bajpai John Mark Sexton Teodora C. Our relationship with nature not only defines our history, it shapes our future, too. Yet beneath the surface of Iceland’s fjords, an industrial fish farming method threatens to destroy one of Europe’s last remaining wildernesses. Open net salmon farms wreak havoc on the fragile environments they’re placed in, polluting pristine ecosystems while mistreating the farmed fish and driving local salmon populations to extinction. It’s an industry at odds with Iceland’s untouched landscape, and as a growing local movement has shown, nothing replaces nature. Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation tells the story of a country united by its lands and waters, and the power of a community to protect the wild places and animals that helped forge its identity. https://lnkd.in/dnB6zksv 🌍 Earth is now our only shareholder * Patagonia *

1.Dredging: Residents Protest Indiscriminate Dredging in Badagry Communities https://ift.tt/vrDsf0L Dredging Growing Concerns Over Indiscriminate Dredging in Badagry Residents of Ganyingbo and Gbaji-Yeketome communities in the Badagry-West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have raised their voices against the rampant and uncontrolled dredging activities in their locality. On Monday, a significant number of community members took to the streets to protest, wielding placards with poignant messages such as “Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, please save us from indiscriminate dredging.” The protest underscored the escalating concerns over the environmental and socio-economic impacts of these dredging activities. Environmental Impact of Dredging Activities The indiscriminate dredging in Badagry has led to severe environmental degradation. The dredging operations have disrupted the natural ecosystem, causing soil erosion and the destruction of aquatic habitats. This degradation poses a significant threat to the biodiversity in the region, with several species of fish and other aquatic life being adversely affected. Furthermore, the erosion has resulted in the loss of agricultural land, impacting the livelihoods of farmers who depend on these lands for their sustenance. Erosion and Soil Degradation Erosion caused by unregulated dredging has led to the weakening of riverbanks and the loss of fertile topsoil. This soil degradation has far-reaching consequences for agricultural productivity in the area. Many farmers have reported a decline in crop yields due to the loss of nutrient-rich soil, which directly impacts food security and the local economy. The sediment displacement also affects the quality of water in the rivers, further complicating the situation for both human and aquatic life. Economic Ramifications for the Local Community The economic impact of the dredging activities cannot be overstated. The indiscriminate dredging has led to the displacement of many residents, as their homes and farmlands have been washed away or rendered unusable. The loss of farmland has particularly hit the local agrarian economy hard, as many families rely on agriculture as their primary source of income. Additionally, the fishing industry, which is another critical economic pillar for the community, has suffered due to the depletion of fish stocks caused by habitat destruction. Impact on Fishing Communities Fishermen in Ganyingbo and Gbaji-Yeketome have reported a significant decline in their daily catch, attributing this to the disruption of aquatic ecosystems by dredging. The reduction in fish populations not only affects the livelihoods of fishermen but also has a ripple effect on the local markets and food supply. With fewer fish available, prices have risen, making it difficult for residents to afford this once-abundant source of protein. Health and Safety Concerns Beyond environmental and economic issues, the health and safety of the residents ...

Water Bandits film premiere with Lucy Martens Thanks to Alpha Lo for sharing this! In Rajasthan's Dolphur region, once plagued by banditry due to water scarcity, a remarkable transformation has occurred. Dr. Rajendra Singh, known as the "Water Man of India," spearheaded this change with indigenous water management techniques. His team collaborated with local communities to rebuild traditional water structures, replenishing underground aquifers and restoring wells. This community-driven initiative, independent of government aid, relied on trust and collective effort. The local bandits turn in their guns for shovels and become guardians of water. This short film tells the story of water as a healer and unifying force. This film is a beautiful account of the remarkable journey of a region that once grappled with violence induced by water stress, and has now embraced peace through decentralized water retention and natural agriculture. The community's commitment to harmonizing with nature has led to extraordinary changes, primarily by harnessing the seasonal monsoons to rehydrate the earth. Community efforts throughout this region have brought water back to more than 250,000 wells, rejuvenated 9 rivers, and even reduced temperatures by 2 degrees. From Violence to Peace: Experience the peaceful and prosperous results of a region that used to be destitute and violent. Due to water stress and scarcity people had no way to provide for their families. Some migrated, others resorted to violence to survive. Years later these same people turned over their arms and asked for forgiveness, as they were now peaceful farmers. Water Stories is a community committed to water cycle restoration with films, videos, articles, webinars, live events, and a whole training program for those ready to become practitioners. https://lnkd.in/eFTGCJ9r https://lnkd.in/gyMWDUFc https://lnkd.in/gxq7gv2M

"The secret is this: If farmers want to raise food in a way that is better for all concerned, and if they don't want to hand over a legacy of desertification, depleted soils, and polluted water to the next generations, they have to stop focusing on the end products and turn around to focus on nature as the source of life and growth. They have to ask if nature is functioning as it should on their farms. Are they working with or against nature? And then they must do everything in their power to colloborate with nature." - Will Harris, author of a Bold Return to Giving a Damn and owner of White Oak Pastures. #soilhealth #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #ecosystemrestoration #naturebasedsolutions #desertification #climateaction #climateresilience

Arboriculturist | Ecologist | Natural Environment Enthusiast 🌳A career shaped and defined by passion.
The Land does not belong to us. We belong to it! I couldn't agree more with the The British Mountaineering Council led campaign for more access. See link for more details: https://lnkd.in/e86eqZs4. Please share if you feel you can. "At the BMC we feel that we should radically re-think our approach to accessing nature. We should aim for a default of inclusion and learn from the do-no-harm approach taken in Scotland and Scandinavia, providing everyone with a Right to Roam. Failing this, our freedoms on access land should be expanded, with rights of access extended to woodlands, all downlands (not just fragments as at present), and Green Belt land. We should be allowed to camp, kayak, swim and climb in these places too. We believe that these activities and freedoms can exist alongside a thriving agricultural landscape and while respecting and looking after our natural landscapes, bringing us closer to nature..." https://lnkd.in/eZdeW3FU

Sobering yet hopeful, ‘Common Ground’ exposes the toxic interconnections of American farming policy, politics, and health, by sharing stories of destruction and healing across the United States and beyond, and how regenerative agriculture and soil health plays a vitally important role in changing these systems for the better. At it's root, it explores how people from different walks of life, different political backgrounds, and different places share one thing in common – the very soil beneath their feet. https://lnkd.in/ejRE-hji #regenerativeagriculture
