Dynamic Pricing is a buzz word 💥 that you hear a lot right now. What do people actually mean when they talk about Dynamic Pricing in the context of E-Commerce or Retail? According to a blog post on the website from Harvard Business School “Dynamic Pricing is a strategy that bases products or services’ prices on evolving market trends, such as: Supply and demand, Competitor pricing and Inventory Levels.” Source: https://lnkd.in/dgd7QQU6 What does this look like in real life? In e-commerce and Retail there are three commonly used Dynamic Pricing Strategies: A. ✅ Competitor-based Pricing: let’s say your competitor reduces the price for a product, and you change your price accordingly. Here the price is dynamic because it reacts to the competitive environment. When competitor prices change, you change your own prices. These types of pricing algorithms rely on accurate competitor price information and need a strong decision-making framework to avoid costly mistakes. B. ✅ Customer Behavior-based Pricing: let’s say you observe increased interest from customers, but not an increase in buying behavior. This might indicate that your price is too high, and you should reduce your price dynamically. These types of pricing strategies rely on data about customer behavior (like traffic and conversion) and dynamically change the price based on this data. C. ✅ Stock-based Pricing: Say you have overstocks and want to sell a particular product quicker. Here you can apply Dynamic Pricing algorithms to optimize your Sales and Margin during the sellout, instead of simply reducing your price. This type of algorithm relies on internal data about stock levels and sell-through. The above shows three different Dynamic Pricing strategies that are used in real life. For all three the input data (e.g. competitor data or traffic data) is critical to make good pricing decisions. This means Dynamic Pricing is empowered and relies on a strong data foundation.
