Unlike the ocean, bays have calm waters that trap toxins. Bays are vital for fishing, aquaculture, and recreation, making the impacts of pollution more noticeable. How do plastic and nutrient pollution affect our bays? http://econimpact.co/v1 An initiative of Economist Impact and The Nippon Foundation

🎣 Over 10% of plastic in our oceans, or ‘marine plastic’, comes from fishing gear and other related items. This amounts to hundreds of thousands of tonnes of #plastic every year. 🔁 ECOS has been an active participant in the development of new European standards for the ‘Circular design of fishing gear and aquaculture equipment’. These standards will help to reduce plastics, #microplastics, and other waste in our oceans that harm wildlife. 🌊 More good news for Baltic Sea conservation... HELCOM just adopted new measures to reduce ammonia emissions from agriculture, serving as a vital step towards ecological restoration and an overall healthier Baltic Sea environment! 🐟 Read the full Recommendation here: https://ow.ly/C17S50RWhh0 Why does it matter❓ Ammonia from agriculture can lead to harmful algal blooms and oxygen dead zones in the Baltic Sea as well as poor air quality. Key steps are therefore needed to reduce these emissions. To combat this, the Recommendation advises sustainable nitrogen management, improved animal diets, better manure handling and low-emission fertiliser techniques. The full news release can be found on HELCOM’s website 👉 https://ow.ly/SqBe50RWhh1 #Agriculture #BalticSea #Eutrophication

Chemicals pose significant dangers to the environment, affecting ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Pesticides, widely used in agriculture, can contaminate soil and water, harming non-target species such as bees, birds, and aquatic organisms. Heavy metals like mercury, lead, and cadmium, often released from industrial processes, accumulate in the food chain, leading to toxic effects on wildlife and humans. Industrial chemicals, including solvents and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), can persist in the environment, causing long-term damage to ecosystems and biodiversity. The widespread use and improper disposal of these chemicals contribute to pollution, habitat destruction, and the disruption of natural processes, underscoring the need for stringent regulations and sustainable practices to mitigate their impact. #safetycourses #safetyofficer #hseprofessionals #hsetraining #hse #hsejobs #safetytraining #healthandsafetytraining #neboshobe #safetyfirst #safetyjobs #experttrainersacademy

Sustainable, responsible aquaculture is critical for future food supplies, providing the planet with nutritious and healthy protein.
When you think of creating a healthier planet, what comes to mind? Electric cars? Wind turbines and solar panels? Smart cities? But what about aquaculture? Responsible and environmentally friendly fish farms play a massive role in achieving the world’s sustainable development goals — and here’s how... 🐟 Reduces fishing pressure on wild stocks. By raising fish in controlled conditions, fish farmers protect endangered species from being overfished and allow their numbers to rebuild. 🌊 Protects our oceans. Responsible fish farms maintain the water quality and biological balance of coastal ecosystems by placing farms away from essential coastal zones. ⚠️ Minimizes environmental impacts. Sustainable aquaculture practices limit the use of antibiotics, pesticides, and other chemicals that can affect marine ecosystems. By shopping and consuming only sustainably farmed fish products, we can help reduce the damage to our planet and its inhabitants. #EarthDay2024 #FishFarming #SustainableAquaculture

Marine litter is one of the most serious threats to the health of marine ecosystems. Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic and other waste end up in our oceans, endangering marine life and damaging marine-related economic activities. To tackle this growing problem, collaboration between scientists, fishermen and local communities is essential. The presence of litter in the seas not only threatens marine biodiversity, but also undermines human health and the global economy. Negative impacts include the death of marine animals, chemical pollution and habitat destruction. In addition, marine litter can interfere with fishing activities, reducing catches and increasing operating costs. #sustainability #bluetransformation #blueeconomy

How does the concentration of toxic chemicals vary geographically (4 dimensional distribution patterns) ? That could be important for clean up plans, even if not for the chemicals it could be an indicator of the sources from which they might be leaching out. Also, the risk mapping could be used to take precautions and inform people who may be coming in contact with that water in some way. Insitu treatment processes may be explored. Floating farms of water hyacinth or some other kind of plants may be tried to clean up the water, even though high salinity could be a problem for some of them, also because of the volumes involved.
