Meet another one of the EcoPlastiC partners: KTH! 👋 The team from the Division of Polymeric Materials from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology is located in #Stockholm, #Sweden. 🇸🇪 Their role in the EcoPlastiC project is to transform the biomasses into #bioplastic materials through #polymer processing. Bioplastic films, blend films, multilayer barrier films, trays and plastic packaging prototypes are produced and the developed #materials are characterised with a number of techniques, including calorimetry, thermogravimetry, infrared spectroscopy and mechanical testing. These #biopolymer materials have potential applications in packaging, such as plastic bags and other single use items. 💎 Enzymes 💎 are forever!   Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) was obtained by a green extraction method using only an enzymatic mix composed of #bromelain and #trypsin. The Eco-Biotechnology and Drug Development Group of the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGE) did some summertime science promotion during the Science Day! 🌞 The Science Day was conceived as a manifestation in honour of the birth of Nikola Tesla under the auspices of the Center for Scientific Research of Students of the Faculty of Biology. The idea of the event is to bring together the scientific achievements of research groups and student sections. 🦠   Under the topic “Innovative waste quest: Can bacteria clean the rest?”, Jelena Lazic, Dušan Milivojević, Vukašin Janković and Ivana Aleksic presented the EcoPlastiC project idea and latest achievements throughout the day to curious visitors of all ages. Behold…! 👀   Our partners from the Biochemical Engineering laboratory BIOENG PT from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa are working hard during summer!   Using the #microbiome selected from marshland sediments, a bioreactor cultivation was successfully performed. The bacterial culture used terephtalic acid #TPA from reactively extruded (REXed) metallized PET as the sole carbon source for #PHA production. Our Project Ambassador Dr Marija Mojicevic from the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) recently attended an intensive Bioprocessing #Workshop on bacteria cultivation in BioSTAT B (5 L) and BioSTAT C+ (30 L). The process demonstrated at a 30 L scale familiarised participants with the production of #PHA #biopolymer in high bacterial cell density and they also learned about post-processing biomass treatment.   Hosted by the esteemed Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry (ICSC) and the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) in Krakow, Poland, this event was organised after the 6th Symposium on Biotransformations for Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Industry. 🧫🔬   #Microbiology #BacteriaCultivation #ScientificResearch   Avecom, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, BIOENG PT, IMGGE, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
