2024) – New national rankings from the Wall Street Journal of America’s top 500 universities recognize North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University as the nation’s No. 1 public historically Black university. The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse rankings evaluate “how well each college sets graduates up for financial success … how much a school improves students’ chances of graduating and their future earnings,” WSJ says. “We don’t measure reputation, nor the college’s own finances.” The rankings include 14 HBCU campuses, eight of them public. Trailing N.C. A&T among public campuses are, in order: Florida A&M University, North Carolina Central University, Prairie View University, Tennessee State University, Savannah State University, Jackson State University and Alcorn State University.

Can't wait for our second annual Student Success US conference. I'll be moderating some panels and workshops as well as presenting in a few sessions--including one about new survey results and a speed session where attendees will get a few dozen ideas to "try at home." I can assure you that Dr. Amber Williams and the rest of her team will be fantastic hosts -- she is one of the most passionate student success champions I know. Adrienne Provost, a veteran in community college education, has been recognized with the inaugural Terry O'Banion Legacy Award by the League for Innovation in the Community College. The award honors her thought-provoking monograph, 'Social Media Public Scholarship: Reframing the Narrative From the Inside Out.' In her work, Provost challenges community college practitioners to take the lead in shaping the narrative around these institutions through social media. She argues that academic journals are often dominated by university scholars, while social media allows community college voices to be widely heard and reframe the narrative. 'He has inspired and challenged countless scholar-practitioners like me to ask hard questions and push bureaucratic boundaries to meet the needs of students and communities,' Provost said of O'Banion's influence. The League's President and CEO, Rufus Glasper, praised Provost's monograph, stating, 'Her call to action has the potential to influence others' perceptions of community colleges.' O'Banion himself commended the work, calling it 'a scholarly work on a special topic that needs to be spread throughout the community college world.' He noted that as the inaugural paper for the award, it 'sets a high standard for the next round of the award in 2025.' Yesterday at the Louisiana Higher Education Meauxmentum Summit, the Louisiana Board of Regents announced a $400,000 grant from Strada Education Foundation. This grant will support the College to Career Ready: Enhancing Work-Based Learning Experiences for Public Postsecondary Degree Programs initiative. The Louisiana Board of Regents will research public postsecondary degree programs to better understand how various Work-Based Learning Experience (WBLE) practices impact students' ongoing success after graduation. This research will study the impact of designing WBLE that adheres to an evidence-based framework designed to promote overall social mobility with outcomes of higher earnings, career confidence, and satisfaction for all students.

The Flagship has to drive this conversation. Anything less won’t work, and Academics has to be prioritized. Bring back the university seal trapped in the system office, drop the N, and lead with research and teaching excellence. Ask the faculty who have been here how to set us on the right path. This starts by focusing on the R1 faculty.

It’s both incredibly short-sighted, a disservice to the community, and more than likely—a game of political opportunism when liberal arts colleges come under attack—even worse so when they close. Regardless of your personal politics, there’s nothing “liberal” about liberal arts—no more so than now in 2024 versus 1844. We simply can’t pivot society overnight to STEM-only colleges and/or corporate careers, nor can or should we cherry pick institutions to recruit and/or hire from. We need employees and community members who can effectively communicate in writing and verbally, have top-notch presentation skills, pick up context clues by just reading an email or memo, and we need those who can make sense of the important work being done in the STEM field, but explained in a way the rest of us can “get it” and understand. All of that is liberal arts education, so respectfully, don’t ask for people who can communicate effectively if you only want STEM candidates—it simply doesn’t work that way. As a product of a liberal arts education, someone who was/is very familiar with what BSC brought to the Birmingham community, and a neurodivergent learner myself, the ongoing losses of liberal arts institutions is disheartening. The state of Alabama and the city of Birmingham lost a great resource in a region where there aren’t many. Don’t think it can’t happen elsewhere, folks. #LiberalArtsMatter
