Philanthropy is joyous, life-affirming and noble work, but sometimes it is just plain hard. People and relationships can be tricky, so if philanthropy is based on relationships, why would it be easy all the time? However, the trenches of philanthropy can provide great opportunities for strategizing. They can provide time to regroup and often provide protection from the many barriers we relentlessly face. Protective trenches often demand close quarters with folks who share a common cause or vision while providing a great chance to bond. Those tiny spaces can also provide some hard-won truths. The old ABCs of fundraising were to “Always Be Closing” a gift no matter the size or area of impact. However, emphasis on the dollar instead of the donor or the mission is not philanthropy, and this old way of thinking obstructs our shared opportunity to transform health care philanthropy. Now is the time to view opportunities beyond transactional fundraising. Now is the time to embrace being a health care executive and align funding priorities with hospital strategic plans that are focused, flexible and shorter in length—to pivot toward a donor-centered model that leads to accelerated gift closures. According to a study by Fidelity Charitable, 83% of surveyed millennials believe that activism and charitable giving go hand in hand. Generally, millennials are those born between 1981 and 1996. It may just be me and my Gen X tendencies, but I always felt like millennials were so much younger than me...but they aren't. They are adults with philanthropic intent. Many 501C3 organizations have a related 501C4, but for those who don't, are you considering it? With the political division and gridlocked Congress, passing legislation at the local or federal level can become increasingly difficult. As more and more donors look at their giving as a form of impact investing, I predict a shift where donors look to organizations with both C3 and C4 to achieve their philanthropic vision. Family philanthropy can be a beautiful way to come together for a great cause, but there can definitely be a struggle with having all family members feel included and valued for their contributions and viewpoints. Trust is at an all-time low in our country. Because trust is at the core of philanthropy efforts, it is imperative that health care philanthropy teams address this unfortunate trend. A lack of trust leads to patients not seeking care, not believing they are receiving the best care possible, not investing in their hospitals for fear their money won’t be used wisely and even unwillingness to help neighbors to effect change for the better. There is, however, encouraging news. Those of us in philanthropy can combat this growing trend of distrust and move the needle to a more positive state.
