Examining the impact of banning books on queer parenting in public libraries is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, such actions restrict access to resources that can provide support, representation, and validation for LGBTQ+ parents and their families. Banning books with LGBTQ+ themes or characters can contribute to feelings of isolation, shame, and invisibility among queer parents and their children. We chat with Hank Paul Leading Media Professional Manager with Transgender Victoria about this important area for our webpodast with the Australian Sociological Association Furthermore, censoring materials related to queer parenting reinforces harmful stereotypes, perpetuates discrimination, and hinders efforts towards creating inclusive and accepting communities. It sends a message that LGBTQ+ families are not welcome or deserving of representation in public spaces, including libraries that should serve all members of the community. Understanding and addressing the impact of banning books on queer parenting in public libraries is essential for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. It allows for the recognition of diverse family structures, experiences, and identities, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance for LGBTQ+ individuals and families. By examining the effects of censorship on queer parenting materials, libraries can advocate for intellectual freedom, challenge biases, and promote empathy and understanding among library users.

Do you sometimes feel as if we are living in the twilight zone? It is 2024 and efforts to include women, people of color, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and others are being forced to go underground. Names of initiatives have to be changed and titles have to be modified in order to continue the simple work of making opportunities accessible to everyone. We are now in an era in which there are individuals who are going undercover with hidden cameras in order to "catch" employees doing the work of inclusion. On National Latina Day, it’s important to recognize the incredible contributions of Latina leaders and the unique challenges we face. Whether we are leading in universities, corporate offices, in public office, or in our households— the world can be unforgiving to women, especially women in power. For example, a recent report from the from the Center for Countering Digital Hate sheds light on the disproportionate online abuse directed at women in politics, including Latina candidates. The hate that women experience in digital (and physical) spaces is an assault on our collective power. Moreover, as individuals, it robs us of capacity. While Latina leaders are powerful, resilient, and let’s face it– phenomenal, our ganas are not an infinite well. At NALEO Educational Fund national conference in June, powerful leaders spoke about their experiences navigating mental health challenges in public office and the importance of taking care of ourselves and supporting one another. I’m proud and honored to be UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute's first Latina Faculty Director. While this position is new to me, it is reawakening old dreams (working in policy and politics!) that I let go, because at some point, I made a choice not to be too public in my work. Friends, I’m ashamed to admit it– invisibility felt safer. After all, when you don’t have twitter- they can’t slide into your DM’s with nasty messages! That stops now. As our partners at UCLA’s Chicano Studies Research Center remind us, when Latinas lead, everyone thrives. As I step into this new role, I am committed to amplifying Latina voices across the university, the state, and the nation. Now, in honor of National Latina Day, this Latina is going to a Dodgers game!
