People tried to convince me to do #buildingsurveying but I honestly think that I have made my mind up to do quantity surveying. I’ve heard: 👷🏽♀️ Doing that, you won't be much on site 👷🏽♀️ You’ll get bored, it’s boring 👷🏽♀️You’ll be great at building surveying After all of that, I'm still leaning towards QS. You know why? I have the transferrable skills and knowledge to do it and I can always go into building surveying if I choose. Another reason why I decided to go into it because I understand economics very well, I like law and can interpret it very well, I love technology and I understand business. Therefore, what can go wrong❓❓😂 In fact, one of my work colleagues told me that I should have gone into politics because I have a way with words. Fun fact: HR was the closest thing to law with me wanting to become a lawyer when I was younger. At the college careers fair I spoke to an insurance company that has quantity surveying roles. The role sounded quite interesting, which was surveying property claims. Next year will be here before you know it and I'm excited to dive deeper into #construction and #quantitysurveying. Has anyone got recent experience of career advice when leaving School? I'm interested to know if they give students advice not just on career options, but on how to create a CV, interview tips etc? I rarely recruit at School lever level but I'm currently recruiting for an apprentice surveyor and I've been surprised and disappointed in the quality of CV's I received to date. Given the role is for a surveyor working in property, not one CV I received has had any mention of having an interest in working in the property industry, or given any reason why they wanted to apply for the surveying apprenticeship. I appreciate anyone at this age is unlikely to have any work experience but its important to tailor a CV to demonstrate why you've applied to a particular role, it's basic advice but I'm not sure if it is being shared with students. #cvadvice #careersadvice

One of my hopes is that in the near future, the terms Building Inspector, Plans Examiner and Building Official (and terms similar thereto) will be recognized in career assessments that younger people take, and we'll have representation at job fairs. I have filled out many varying forms where my means of employment was necessary to indicate, including when I took my assessment after leaving the Navy. The only reason I knew about the building inspection industry, at that time, was because the college I was going to attend had a BIT (Building Inspection Technology) program. Before this, I had no idea what the role really entailed. Architect, Engineer, Construction Manager, Superintendent, and Planner are in most of these assessments but nothing relating to the code official industry; only "government" or "public service". The reasons this needs to change? 1. The public has no idea what these roles are and what training and education is needed to fill one of them, especially Building Official. 2. This further legitimizes the code official title within society's understanding of various career paths. 3. With many seasoned professionals retiring within the next 5-10 years, these roles need to be filled and our communities deserve people dedicated to approaching these roles as careers that require a great deal of training and education. #career #careerassessment #job #publicservice #codeofficial #buildinginspector #planexaminer #buildingofficial #communitydevelopment

How I landed my first full-time job in the United States as an international student? Many individuals do not share this, but it is worth sharing my strategies in hopes it might assist some of you. From my first day as a graduate student in civil engineering at University of Notre Dame, I started submitting applications for a several positions using the following strategies: 1. I selected the library as my second home and scheduled two hours per day for only researching and learning from YouTube about the best techniques to get a wonderful career. 2. I applied to roughly five hundred positions through LinkedIn, Handshake, and email through my master. 3. I concentrated on my LinkedIn page and how to make it an appealing tool for attracting recruiters and increasing my network contacts to over 500 professionals in a few months. 4. I followed my university professors' guidance and recommendations while requesting them to refer to my resume (Miss you all!). Notre Dame Master of Engineering (MEng) 5. I attended every single job fair and attempted to speak with the owners personally and shared with them some innovative ideas that i have. 6. I updated my résumé and attached some qualifications to my applications, such as OSHA. 7. and a lot more. However, I am sharing this with you for a couple of reasons: 1. The market is crazy, therefore work hard on yourself and smartly towards your goals. 2. Never accept "NO" without feedback. 3. If you believe in your skills and your dreams, everything will work out and assist you achieve them. Finally, I am still developing myself, and if I do not reach the stars, I will certainly reach the sky! College day for me, but what a great day it has been! Today, we had careers fair at MidKent College where I had great conversations with Siemens Energy, Genco Construction Services Limited , CC Cousins, Trinity Claims, Golding Homes, St. Modwen Homes and more! My conversations went from new #housebuilds, #electricalplants at National Grid, #quantitysurveying, #hvac, #surveying, #iosh and #nebosh to #retrofitting. I can’t wait to dive into #surveying and even told one company that I am a RICS student member already. Nick Inge I saw your Itrust logo and mentioned you today. I watched a bit of the process whilst the work for installation of the #groundsourceheatpumps took place on our college campus. I even spoke about taking the #retrofit coordinator course that the college will offer. Then in college we are preparing for our next assignment so I did work on Hooke’s Law (elasticity of materials) and researched how to achieve #fireprotection in a #commercialbuild. I have an exam on fire protection soon. Not to mention, I finally managed to get the car cleaned.
