Thank you Health News Illinois for highlighting this important conversation! When asked "What role do free and charitable clinics play in the healthcare system?" IAFCC Executive Director, Melissa Maguire answered proudly: "There are 52 free and charitable clinics in Illinois, and over 1,400 in the country. For about 40 years, in different ways, shapes and forms, these clinics have been providing primary care, dental care, behavioral healthcare to the uninsured in many different, diverse ways, depending on the needs of the community. Some of the clinics have free-standing sites. Some clinics are mobile. Some clinics are partners with community-based organizations. The difference between our clinics and other community health centers is that they don't get federal funds. They have been primarily getting support from individual donations, foundations and fundraisers. So getting the state funds has been transformative because it provides the clinics with the needed support for them to continue this. Many of the clinics were founded by providers who identified a need in their community. Many were emergency department doctors who looked in their emergency room and said, ‘There are patients here that really should be getting care in the community, rather than in the emergency department.’ They opened these clinics up. Volunteer providers are still a critical part of the free and charitable clinics. Many of our clinics still utilize volunteer provider services for primary care, dental care and behavioral healthcare. Each year, over 100,000 visits are provided to patients by free and charitable clinics. They have pharmacies on site. They have wraparound services. So a patient can go into a free and charitable clinic, see a provider and get their medication at no cost." #IFCCM24 #ILFreeClinicsMonth2024
We recently caught up with Melissa Maguire from the Illinois Association of Free and Charitable Clinics to discuss Gov. JB Pritzker announcing August as Free and Charitable Clinics Month and free clinics' role in the healthcare system.
