SDGs Session 3 Concept and Evolution of Sustainable Development- Emmanuel Ola Olowoyo I learnt! #Sustainable development is a development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. #The SDGs is a path for a world in which prosperity is shared, societies are inclusive and the environment is kept safe. #SDGs can be traced back to 1948 of Human Right, hence evolved into several concepts and phases until the real implementation as of September, 2015. #SDGs is applicable to everyone, race, religion, status etc. #It is with a driven force of "leave none behind" hence, the younger generation has to be informed and be a starter of this force. #SDGs 17 goals have both target and indicator, 169 targets and about 230+ indicators. Having that both are interconnected. #Nigeria's position in this SDGs track is downward compared to other nations, but we are giants and strong enough to come upward. This year’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) week had a lot of discussions about leveraging digital technologies to advance sustainable development. This was the common goal of several forums and bilateral meetings that I attended with our partners from the World Economic Forum (WEF), International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and UNDP Arab States. In these meetings we discussed our engagement in different work streams to overall improve lives and accelerate development, everywhere we operate. I also had the privilege of speaking at UNDP’s Digital 4 Sustainable Development (D4SD) event, where I shared e&’s sustainability initiatives that will drive a tangible positive impact across our communities. Today, I am pleased to officially announce the signing of an MoU between e& and UNDP. This collaboration aligns with our commitment to empower societies and drive economic growth advancing our collaboration in three areas focused on action: 1. AI for Sustainable Development (AI4SD): We’re developing an AI-powered Climate & Natural Disaster Crises Platform (CNDC) to better predict, respond to, and mitigate the effects of natural disasters in Arab nations. The platform will equip governments with insights to build long-term resilience. 2. Digital Economy: We’re supporting MSMEs and individuals, with a focus on women entrepreneurs, through digital solutions, including the Erada Microfinance Platform in Egypt (a subsidiary of e& Egypt ) 3. Digital Capacity Building: e& Egypt and UNDP are working on extending the reach of the ongoing Knowledge Project (2020-2030), providing free online courses – boosting digital literacy in the nation. Six years into the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, several countries’ strategies to engage stakeholders are still in the early stages. Many stakeholder engagement practices are strong in some ways but weak in others, with little guidance available for a systematic analysis. The COVID-19 pandemic has added to the challenges of engaging stakeholders in implementation efforts. Now, it is more important than ever to ensure that there is dialogue to guide government action and maintain social cohesion. Against this backdrop, UN DESA and UNDP have developed an analytical framework to enable governments, stakeholders, and development partners alike to examine and strengthen the quality of their stakeholder engagement practices at different stages of the 2030 Agenda cycle, including considering the impact of COVID-19. I recently participated in the Africa Mentorship Programme's SDGs Workshop Series 3, focusing on the concept and evolution of sustainable development. The workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a roadmap for a greener, healthier, and more equitable future. Here are some key takeaways that resonated with me: 1. The three pillars of sustainable development: learned about the critical balance between social, economic, and environmental aspects for a truly sustainable future. 2. From MDGs to SDGs: The workshop explored the evolution from the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the more specific and comprehensive 17 SDGs. 3. The power of partnership: Achieving the SDGs requires collaboration across individuals, governments, and NGOs. 4. Six transformations for change: The workshop highlighted six key areas for transformation, including education, health, energy, and sustainable cities. 5. Amplifying SDGs: a call to action: We discussed impactful strategies like education, innovation, and policy changes to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. The workshop ignited my passion for contributing to a sustainable future. I'm eager to learn more about how individuals can leverage the "levers" mentioned, such as science and technology, to make a positive difference. What aspect of the SDGs excites you the most? WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM: How to close sustainable development gaps across the Middle East and North Africa ➡️Middle East and North African (MENA) countries currently score an average of 59.8 out of 100 on realizing the UN Sustainable Development Group Development Goals (SDG), with 14 Arab countries yet to achieve even a single goal. ➡️This lack of progress could add 60 years to the time needed for the world to achieve the sustainable development agenda unless countries take significant action ahead of the 2030 SDG deadline. ➡️By targeting investments in initiatives promoting inclusive and equitable growth, youth and skills, and technology, MENA could make up for some of this lost time. Almost a decade after the adoption of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – a global plan to help people, the planet, and prosperity – the world is seriously behind schedule. Halfway to the 2030 deadline, only 17% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on track to be met. Progress is weak on 50% of the goals and, even worse, more than 30% of targets are seeing reversals. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a 2023 regional assessment scored its SDG progress at an average of 59.8 out of 100. Only seven Arab countries scored above 65, but even more alarmingly, 14 Arab nations have not yet achieved a single SDG target.
