Deforestation from slash-and-burn agriculture, charcoal production, and overexploitation has devastated Ethiopia’s forests. 🌳 To address these drivers of degradation, we are partnering with local communities to restore over 10,000 hectares using seedlings nurseries and Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR). Seedlings germinate in seed nurseries, that protect and nourish them, until they are ready to be planted in their natural environment. FMNR is a restoration process that involves cutting back excess shoots from coppice stumps to leave one or two dominant stems. This creates rapid tree regrowth, restoring the canopy, retaining moisture, and enriching the soil. These techniques support our goal to restore degraded landscapes, increase water resources, reduce landslides, and foster community development. The well-being and the health of the planet are inseparable. Join us in making a difference for communities and land in Ethiopia. 🌎 https://lnkd.in/g_KFtMfP #EthiopiaRestoration #FMNR #Reforestation #GenerationRestoration #Conservation

Today is World Environment Day, and the world needs us now more than ever. At Norwegian Church Aid Ethiopia, we have been contributing to environmentally resilient communities for five decades now. Together with our partners and local communities, our commitment to addressing land degradation, deforestation, and community resilience has translated into tangible, life-changing projects across Ethiopia. Over the past four years, in Amhara, Oromia, Somali, and Tigray regions, we helped: • Rehabilitate over 3,500 hectares of degraded land. • Protect highly vulnerable forests from deforestation. • Plant over 6 million multipurpose trees. • Provide clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene to 48,220+ people. • Construct and rehabilitated springs and boreholes. • Provide essential WASH Non-Food Items (NFIs). • Empower 133,800+ households with seeds, farm tools, fertilizers, solar irrigation pumps, small ruminants, chickens, oxen, forage seeds, and vaccination support and engaged families in small businesses for sustainable income. The world still needs us to unite and make an impact, big or small, for the next generation. hashtag #GenerationRestoration #WorldEnvironmentDay2024

45% of Africa's land is impacted by desertification, leading to biodiversity loss and threatening the livelihoods of countless farmers. Yet, protecting the remaining fertile lands is not enough. That's why the new hashtag #GenerationRestoration Flagship Trees for the Future is reviving degraded land through innovative agroforestry techniques. By working closely with tens of thousands of farmers on degraded lands, the Flagship “African Farmers Transforming Food Systems” has restored over 40,000 hectares. As a UN World Restoration Flagship, Farmers in Trees for the Future program, are leading the #climatechange mitigation and adaptation movement! while also: 1) Creating ecosystem synergies allowing the intercropping system to produce higher yields 2) Protecting the fragile semi-arid soil ecosystem where soil conditions cannot support typical monoculture crops. 3) Ensuring large quantities of biomass for mulching and moisture retention. 4) Increasing farmer incomes and food security 5) Developing resilience to rainfall variability, including drought and flooding: reducing the effects of climate-induced hydro meteorological events by transforming dryland into a sponge that can absorb and channel rainwater into the ground during heavy rain events and release green water during months of drought. 6) Improving soil fertility through intensive mulching, use of compost, and the introduction of nitrogen-fixing (leguminous) cover crops. 7) Adopting organic practices - no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. 8) Creating a microclimate within the field to allow crops to grow during intense heat events #generationrestoration

Did you know? 45% of Africa's land is impacted by desertification, threatening biodiversity and the livelihoods of farmers. But it's not just Africa facing this challenge. In India, too, we see the detrimental effects of land degradation on our environment and communities. That's why we need to take inspiration from initiatives like #GenerationRestoration's Flagship Trees for the Future. By implementing innovative agroforestry techniques, we can revive degraded land and create a greener future for India. Just like African farmers, Indian farmers have the potential to transform our food systems and restore our lands. With our abundant resources and strong community networks, we can make a significant impact on the environment while uplifting communities and reducing poverty. Let's follow in the footsteps of our African counterparts and take up the challenge of restoring our land through agroforestry. Together, we can create a sustainable future for India and generations to come! #AgroforestryIndia #SustainableAgriculture #LandRestoration #CommunityDevelopment #GreenIndia #RuralEmpowerment #ClimateAction #Inspiration #GlobalInitiatives #SustainableFuture #IndiaFarmers #AgroforestryTechniques #BiodiversityConservation #PovertyReduction #HopeForTomorrow

How can African farmers produce more food for the world? Transforming - Agriculture - Technology - Seed Formulation - Irrigation - Storage - Processing - Packaging We have many water sources, enough land, enough sunlight, plenty youth to create a million plus jobs and drive the agricultural industry forward into a sustainable future by feeding the world.

The Tree of Life: የህይወት ዛፍ Amazing Baobab Trees The biggest plant on our planet is the baobab tree, an enormous “upside down” tree that can live for thousands of years! The African baobab tree, known for its ability to store water in its trunk, offers valuable insights for water management in drought-prone regions like Ethiopia. Baobabs can survive by retaining up to 75% of their structure as water, making them resilient in dry climates. This natural water-saving strategy can inspire innovative solutions for Ethiopia, especially in areas facing water shortages. By promoting drought-resistant crops, efficient farming techniques, and planting indigenous trees like the baobab, Ethiopia can enhance water conservation, support reforestation, and improve climate resilience. #WaterConservation #ClimateResilience #SustainableAgriculture #Baobab #Ethiopia #DroughtSolutions

83% of people in sub-Saharan Africa are dependent on land for their livelihoods yet two thirds of the land is highly degraded, threatening livelihoods and the food and nutrition security of the poorest, most vulnerable farmers and pastoralists. Regreening Africa aims to reverse land degradation on 1 million hectares across 8 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. So far, the project has improved the livelihoods, food security, and climate resilience of 500,000 households by restoring ecosystem services, particularly through agroforestry. This work involves the deliberate and systematic integration of trees, crops, and livestock—all critical elements for the sustainable management of land and maintenance of healthy landscapes. Learn more about the project and how it is making a difference. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dqczptuF #RegreenAfrica #GenerationRestoration

Desertification affects around 45 per cent of Africa’s land, with 55 per cent of this area considered at “high” or “very high” risk of further degradation. The effects of this to food security, conflict and sustainable development is witnessed by over 1.12 billion people. Restoring these landscapes is therefore an important step to reversing these effects. https://lnkd.in/dvYxzbSj
