Today is #EarthOvershootDay – the point in the year when we’ve used up more of Earth's resources than it can replenish 🌏 The first Earth Overshoot Day was on 25th December 1971. Now, we’re hitting this mark nearly 5 months earlier. WeForest is committed to moving back the date of Earth Overshoot Day by working with communities worldwide to restore and sustain forests. Forests are one of the best ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere and help keep global temperatures below 1.5°C. We work with communities from all around the world to achieve this, because ultimately, it’s all about people. Just like this incredible group of 100 women photographed this week preparing 320 000 tree seedlings to be planted in Zambia. I can’t lie: I absolutely relished the October heat wave we just said goodbye to in southeastern Michigan. We had temperatures so hot I was day dreaming of wading in a (much cleaner) Huron, this river running through our local Ypsilanti community and connecting us to surrounding towns. At the same time I also thought about what it means for our climate, and societies everywere to see temperatures in the nineties here in October, a time we are normally getting out sweaters and winter coats. Thoughts I have every day seem to shout louder: about what we have done to the planet, how irreversible climate crisis is at this point, where communities are being impacted most, and what I can do to make positive changes. Climate crisis is a human rights crisis. Countries hit the hardest are places like Chad, Somalia, Syria, DRC. Communities already facing staggering chellenges. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and hopeless, so I look for encouragement in tangible things I can do to make a difference: shopping locally, building a permaculture garden, buying things second hand. And I am also exploring the concept of degrowth; a movement which I only learned about recently. More on that as I learn more myself. Graine de Vie actions bear fruit – literally! 12 ha of private land in Madagascar (Sakaramy/Diego II) was reforested in 2019 and it continues to strive with cash crop and forest trees together. Every year this #reforestation trees produce fruit for the parcel owner and #sequesterCO2 to help the planet. This is a perfect example of how our #communitydevelopment projects are improving livelihoods of thousands of people and empower them to restore and protect their #naturalenvironment. 

21 schools in South West Tanzania are taking a proactive step towards climate action by joining the Study with a Tree campaign. These schools, with forests of 4 million trees, are already removing and storing 100,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The commitment from Schools and Community leaders to nurture forests is concluded. The transformation of these forests into forest gardens, with the planting and propagation of fruit tree seeds by school children, is a vital contribution to the carbon sink. These forests are on their way to being part of the Tanzanian carbon registry for carbon compensation. Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, is a breathtaking destination known for its stunning natural beauty. The country is blessed with diverse ecosystems, including lush rainforests, expansive savannahs, and serene lakes. Its nature is home to an incredible array of wildlife, including the endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Uganda is also renowned for its powerful waterfalls, such as Murchison Falls and Sipi Falls, which captivate visitors with their majestic cascades. The country's climate is generally favorable, with a pleasant tropical climate characterized by warm temperatures and two distinct rainy seasons. Why do we need to restore degraded lands in the Sahel and achieve the #GreatGreenWall? When the land degrades, it destroys the water table causing them to dry up. Communities have to struggle through hard means to access water for basic needs and activities. Not to talk of safe drinking water. The need to restore lands is imperative and urgent. Growing the lost biodiversity and ecosystems is key. Let's get trees into the ground and recharge the water table to ensure everyone has water they need. Our ambitious vision to grow One Billion Trees for Africa to attain the #GreatGreenWall is a journey of life we all need to join. One tree, one source of drinking water and home energy is #hope for many. One hectare, One life, home, one community at a time. Together we can do it.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟯𝟬 African countries, under the Africa Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (𝗔𝗙𝗥𝟭𝟬𝟬), have pledged to restore 𝟭𝟬𝟬+ 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 of degraded forest land by 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬. This country-led effort aims to accelerate restoration, mitigate rural poverty, and enhance food security & climate resilience. Kenya, in line with this commitment, has initiated a plan to plant 𝟭𝟱 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 trees by 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟮 However, historical tree-planting initiatives have often fallen short of their lofty goals. Statistical estimates suggest anywhere between 𝟮𝟬 and 𝟭𝟬𝟬% of planted tree seeds and seedlings usually die. This is to show that the 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 of these efforts lies not just in planting trees but in ensuring their 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 and 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵. This is where Treety comes in.
