All venues are connected to the grid, enabling them to use renewable energy – significantly reducing the carbon footprint. Solar panels have been installed on the Aquatics Centre and the Olympic Village to harness solar energy. Additionally, geothermal cooling systems are being used at the Olympic Village instead of traditional air conditioning, further enhancing energy efficiency. Significant investment will be required to transition #aviation to #netzero. However every challenge present new opportunities. Whilst at the turn of the century we witnessed #airports transition their business model from one focused on aeronautical activities and revenues to one focused on logistics and real estate, airports have the opportunity to #transition their business model to become #regional #energy hubs, fostering research into and developping energy infrastructures (#biofuel, #solar, #wind, #hydrogen) that will not only make them netzero organisations and support the aviation ecosystem but also support the energy transition and supply chain of their wider region and #communities. #aviationinnovation #aviationindustry #sustainableaviation

The European Hydrogen Bank pilot auction for renewable hydrogen production in Europe received 132 bids from projects in 17 European countries. However, according to the Argus, only a small proportion of them are likely to be successful. A second, larger auction round is likely to be launched in the autumn instead of the planned spring 2024 deadline. Southwest Airlines announces the acquisition of SAFFiRE Renewables (#SAFFiRE) as part of the investment portfolio of its wholly-owned subsidiary #SouthwestAirlinesRenewableVentures, committed to creating more opportunities for Southwest to source sustainable, scalable aviation fuel (SAF). SAFFiRE is part of a project supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), to develop and produce scalable renewable ethanol that can be transformed into #SAF. Adif Zulkifli, Executive Vice President and CEO-Upstream, Petronas, took to the stage on the first day of the International Energy Summit to give a keynote speech looking at how his company has focussed on achieving net zero. ‘2015 was a significant year. I feel this is when the need to act on climate change truly entered the mainstream consciousness. This is the year when the Paris Agreement was signed, with a pledge to cut carbon emissions, and I know some people in this room were involved in the agreement. The goals and ambitions set out in the road to preserve the planet are lofty, but the solutions need to be practical. ‘Energy isn’t just what runs our house and cars – it is core to everything in our way of life, right down to the food we eat. Nowhere is this more obvious than in South East Asia. Here fossil fuels still count for 70% of our energy and this is what has kept the lights on across the continent. Despite this, the countries in the region have still pledged to reduce carbon intensity. This needs a collective effort from all aspects of society, but NOCs will play the largest role. ‘At Petronas, we have an unwavering commitment to reducing emissions. In 2020, we became the first SE Asian OG company to declare aspiration of achieving net zero by 2050. Our Energy Transition Strategy is threefold. The core business needs to produce more energy with fewer emissions. Our new business needs to capture new growth opportunities, for example - CCS, renewables, and hydrogen. Finally, we need to achieve net zero carbon emissions. ‘This strategy needs to be pretty on paper but also practical and grounded in reality.’ #aienIES

Six large companies came together for the use of hydrogen in aviation.Hydrogen News - Leading companies such as Airbus, Aena, Air Nostrum, Iberia, Exolum and Repsol have joined forces to work on the creation of the country's first aerospace hydrogen center.This initiative covers the integration of hydrogen-powered aircraft into airports across the country and the entire value chain, from basic energy production of hydrogen to ground operations.With this cooperation, it is aimed to make an important contribution to the aviation industry's goal of reducing carbon emissions, taking into account Spain's great potential in renewable energy and low-carbon hydrogen production.Karine Guenan, Airbus's Vice President of ZEROe Ecosystem, stated that aviation is one of the most important goals of reducing its carbon footprint and that hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft and their ecosystem play a key role in achieving this goal. https://lnkd.in/gPTVtgur

🇪🇺 🏭 More exciting news for the decarbonization of European #industry: TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with European partners to develop the OranjeWind #offshorewind farm in the 🇳🇱Netherlands that will produce approximately 40,000 tons of green #hydrogen via electrolysis annually.   This green or low-carbon hydrogen will be crucial for decarbonizing our European refineries, eliminating the emission of about 400,000 tons of CO2 per year. The project also contributes to the stabilization of the grid by storing excess production (batteries and heat), while helping support the Netherlands in meeting its #decarbonization targets.
