American Council on Education's newest brief, and second in partnership with the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies, uses insights from the our Diverse Learning Environments Survey (DLE) to examine why students choose to stop out. The DLE gathers student perceptions about the institutional climate, including their experiences with faculty, staff, and peers, as well as their learning outcomes. It focuses on diverse student populations and is grounded in research on varied student bodies and complex issues such as student mobility and intergroup relations. The ACE Briefs Series capture some of the many things your institution can learn from surveys of your students, faculty, and staff. https://lnkd.in/g6G38wct Also check out the first brief in the series, on the sense of belonging: https://lnkd.in/gXPugtzC #evidencebaseddecisions #datastories #highereducation #surveys

When we use data across sectors and agencies, everyone can make more informed decisions. See what Collaborative member DC Office of Education Through Employment Pathways can do with data that links UDC program offerings and degree programs with DC's labor market.
This week, we published a new report entitled, “Pathways to Opportunity: Alignment between University of the District of Columbia Programming and Labor Market Demand.” This report illuminates key trends about current UDC program offerings across the associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs, and the extent to which enrollment is on pace to meet labor market demand. We have also just published our Year One Annual Report, which highlights the progress that we have made since the launch of our office. A few highlights: - We engaged more than 200 stakeholders to inform our priorities - We finalized our three-year research agenda, along with our mission and vision based on unanimous approval from our Policy Board - We published our first research publication focused on access to Career and Technical Education and alignment with high-wage jobs. More elite campuses are expanding their financial aid programs "when public resentment of elite institutions has reached a fever pitch and doubts about the value of college are at a historic high," in today's Inside Higher Ed. Our social intelligence research found that almost half (45%) of individuals believe there are significant caveats to deciding whether or not to attend college. We outline four strategies leaders can use to rebuild trust, including leading with transparency. Cost and financial aid were among the most pressing pain points shared in the data. Campuses that clearly communicate cost and value early and in spaces your audiences frequent are more likely to build trust with their audience. Get the rest of our strategies and download the report. https://hubs.li/Q02Zl7rG0

I like to think of the national challenge inside of Christensen's theories of innovation. To remain competitive, colleges & universities need to serve the non consumer of post secondary education. Imagine if every 4Y public continuing education department revamped a dozen certification programs that aligned with regional labor market needs? With virtual collaborative convenings it can be done!
Another gem this morning! "This research reveals a serious relational disconnect between the [some college, no credential] population and higher education institutions. We really need to do a reset here regarding how we interface with this learner. They are not the same learners from a decade ago, yet the programs, marketing and enrollment management processes are largely the same." – Jim Fong, Chief Research Officer, UPCEA "As traditional student enrollment declines and institutions close their doors, more than 40 million adult learners are waiting to be re-engaged. The time has come for higher education to rethink its strategy.” – Amy Smith, Ph.D., Chief Learning Officer, StraighterLine via https://lnkd.in/e9kKYFSP
