Women in Construction Week 2024! Maggie Childers - Talent Acquisition and Retention Specialist "I am new to the construction industry. My role includes recruiting, hiring, training, and retaining our staff. It is an ever-changing role, and I love it! I am working with people who are responsible for preparing the ground/underground for building. Without our team, projects couldn’t get started. The best thing about working at Edgerton is that everyone wants everyone else to succeed. We need each other to win. Everyone who I work with does their best to collaborate for the greater good. Diversity and Inclusivity in Construction. What are the facts and what can we do to improve? The theme for National Inclusion Week 2024 is 'Impact Matters', a call-to-action for everyone, from leaders and inclusion professionals through to individuals. At Hexa, we understand that the construction industry is too far behind other industries in recruiting underrepresented groups for example: 👷♀️ Women make up 15 percent of the UK construction industry, with approximately 2 percent working on-site. 👷🏿♂️ BAME employees make up 6 percent of the workforce. 💪🏾 Disabled employees also make up 6 percent of the workforce. As part of our drive to change this, we can commit to being a fair employer, through: ⬡ A clear code conduct – to ensure everyone is treated with fairness and respect. ⬡ Equal & Fair pay - commit to being a Real Living Wage employer and believe everyone deserves a fair day’s pay. ⬡ Recruit Fairly – set targets for hiring, promotion, and retention of underrepresented groups and fair, equal opportunities should be offered to candidates, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, and age. ⬡ Mentorship and Sponsorship Programs - develop mentorship opportunities specifically aimed at underrepresented groups to help them navigate their career paths and connect with leadership. ⬡ Regular Training - conduct ongoing diversity training and workshops to educate employees about unconscious bias, cultural competency, and inclusive practices. Please share any ideas so we can drive a change together! #ImpactMatters #NationalInclusionWeek #Diversity #Inclusivity #Construction

We've got a pressing issue on our hands ❗ The lack of women in hard hats. 👷♀️ A word from Abbie Warren on the importance of improving the gender imbalance in construction: It's high time we address this imbalance and build a workforce that's as diverse as the skylines we're creating. 🏢 Attracting women to construction isn't just about slapping a "Women Welcome" sign on the job site. We need to tackle the elephant in the room - the perception that construction is a boys-only club. This outdated image is doing us no favours in recruiting top female talent. So, what's the game plan? Let's get creative with our recruitment. We need to showcase the amazing opportunities for women in construction. 🚧 Think of career growth that rivals the heights of our tallest towers and the chance to literally shape the world around us. But here's the kicker - getting women through the door is just the beginning. We need to make sure they want to stick around. 🏗 That means creating a work environment where everyone feels valued: 1. Equal pay 2. Advancement opportunities 3. A workplace free from outdated stereotypes 4. Women-friendly facilities Let's be real - we all have our biases. It's time to recognise them and kick them to the curb. By embracing diversity, we're not just doing the right thing - we're building a stronger industry. Different perspectives lead to innovation, and in a field that's all about pushing boundaries, that's what we need. 📈 Want to know more? WIC Week Day 2: Keys To the Future Among our team are Riley Lang, Hailey Souder, Blair Engel, Jelena Pandurevic-Magazin, and Rhonda E. Orange, MBA, CET, each bringing unique experiences to the construction industry. These are women with different experiences in construction but have continued this career path due to the rewarding nature. Rhonda Orange was one of the first women at Hill to have been promoted to a managerial position, paving the way for future women of Hill like Riley Lang who has 2 years of experience in the industry and is already a Project Manager. The keys to the future for women in construction lie in fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment where they feel valued and respected. Providing equal opportunities for training and advancement is crucial to ensuring women can thrive and excel in the industry. Like how Jelena received in-house Revit training here at Hill. Implementing policies that promote diversity and address barriers to entry, such as gender bias and discrimination, is essential for creating a level playing field. Finally, actively promoting and celebrating the achievements of women in construction can help inspire future generations to pursue careers in the field. #WICWeek24 #WomenInConstruction National Association of Women in Construction #MechanicalContractor #HVAC #MechanicalEngineering #Construction #Plumbing #BuildingSystems #HVACR #IndustrialMechanical #EnergyEfficiency #CommercialMechanical #MechanicalServices #FacilityMaintenance #HVACInstallation #MechanicalDesign #BuildingAutomation
