Shoppers paid less at the checkout for cheese, butter and ice cream at Foodstuffs stores in December, and many veggies were down over 30%. But there’s now growing potential for inflationary headwinds due to tensions in the Middle East. Latest data from Stats NZ and Foodstuffs shows a continued decline in the rate of food price inflation in New Zealand, with Stats’ Food Price Index (FPI) showing a 4.8%pa rise in December, compared to a year ago, with a 4.3%pa rise in the same categories at Foodstuffs’ 500+ stores. Foodstuffs data shows 1kg blocks of Pams cheese were down 14%, on average, while Pams 500g blocks of butter were down 16%. However, the biggest year-on-year falls were for courgettes and tomatoes, plummeting by 52% and 43%, respectively, while avocados were down 38% and capsicums down 31%. Into Q2 we go! As expected, April brought some volume declines with Easter-related sales shifting from April into March this year. But per Circana, year-to-date dollar and volume sales are trending ahead of last year, particularly in the fresh perimeter. - Food and beverage unit prices increased 1.9% in April (the 4 w.e. 4/28/24) and were up 33% from 2019. Consumers who are most affected tend to lean into home-cooked meals as a way to balance spending. They are more focused on price, private brands, value channels and sales promotions while de-emphasizing nutrition and convenience. - A few departments still managed to grow volume sales in April, including fresh #produce with a stellar performance by #fruit. - #Deli cheese and prepared foods also delivered impressive volume gains, in particular prepared meats (rotisserie and fried chicken, etc.) and pizza. Grab-and-go is driving all growth for deli cheese, meat and prepared foods with service-counter sales flat or down. - Fresh #meat also held its own, up 5.9% in dollars and 3.1% in pounds. Chicken, beef and grinds delivered substantial pound gains. Processed meat had the predictable shortfall with smoked ham dollars having shifted to March. - Seafood sales continued to struggle in ambient, frozen and refrigerated, much like plant-based meat alternatives. Dollar, unit and volume sales for alts continued to trend below year-ago levels by double digits. Looking ahead, May counts a number of important sales holidays, including Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, with special celebrations remaining the most important time for shoppers to splurge a little. I’ll send out the reports shortly. If you’d like copies, just ping!

Heads up to all researchers of consumer behavior! Here is a consumer-centric article from the The Wall Street Journal with many stories about how consumers are getting creative with their meal planning and food budgets, to cope with higher food prices. Key take-aways from the SIVO, Inc. team include: - Food costs are a universal concern - not just a problem for some consumers segments with lower incomes or large families. - The convenience of take-out and restaurant dining has become "not worth it." - The wholesale (e.g., Costco) and value/dollar stores (e.g., Aldi) are even more attractive. - Coupons will keep some shoppers coming to traditional grocery retailers. - Big pot recipes are winning over gourmet meals. - DIY solutions (e.g., gardens, raising chickens, hunting and potlucks) are increasingly part of the solution. Using Mobile Missions and in-store Shop-Alongs, the SIVO team can help you get closer to your shoppers!
