CORNER POCKET: As a Director, I've been asked to tell many different stories in many different places in many different ways. A lot of the time making what may seem improbable, a reality. This week, I was tasked to take a few photos in a tight space and make it look like it was done without professional help. Which, counterintuitively, takes a lot more work using specific lighting, strategic composition, and a smattering of specialized tools. Show me an "unpolished" piece of popular marketing content, and I'll show you the half dozen or more people behind the scenes that made it happen. It's not the polish that turns people off to professionally produced content, it's the lack of authenticity, artistry, and connection that people push away. People love to be manipulated; they just don't want to know it's happening. Every movie or TV show you love, every song that touches you, every commercial you laugh at, all set out to make you feel something.. on purpose! Likewise, it's the craft that creates the connection that makes you forget you're an audience and makes you feel like you're the only one being spoken to. When telling a story, whether that story is fiction or sales-based, be sure it is crafted with authenticity, artistry and connection, and people will continue coming back for more. #storytellers #videoproduction #marketingandadvertising

Embarking on the Creative Chronicle Hey LinkedIn fam, I've decided to document the ins and outs of my life as an editor, beatmaker, and artist, and it all begins with a blog. 📝🎬 This isn't just about my processes; it's about sharing the heartbeat of my creativity. Or at least some of it. Why write it down when we're living it? That's a question many of us creatives grapple with. Our lives are journals, even if the pages aren't bound. 📖 Each project, each beat, every stroke of the brush, writes a chapter in our unique story. Yet, there's something profound about putting pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard. It's a conscious effort to play catch-up with our own narrative, both creative and realistic. Life moves fast, and in the hustle, we sometimes forget to pause and reflect. So, I'm making the time to make time – to pen down my experiences, processes, and the journey that unfolds in between the beats and frames. There’s no smoke without cliché. How lazy and overused ideas kill creativity. We have all done it. But it doesn't mean it’s right. Cliche’s are — •     Shortcuts  •     Easy fixes •     Obvious placeholders They are the bottom feeders of the creative’s arsenal and within this line I’ve bagged two. The ‘go-to’ for a lot of very average agencies and creatives out there. So, what is a cliché? The word cliché comes from the french for stereotype, a block or print that can be used repeatedly. It began to mean ready-made, often repeated.  A phrase or image that has been used to the extent that it has lost its original meaning. Over a number of years, I’ve worked with Chris Martin.  He took to putting up a Cliché list in the creative departments that he looked after. If any of his creatives presented ideas that were on the list, it was an instant fine.  Chris did fess-up to using most if not all the banned items at some time in his illustrious career. And full transparency, I’ve used them all too. Don’t worry, it’s very natural part of the creative process. When coming up with new ideas, our brains look for patterns, memories and data points that tally with the task. The brain puts those obvious, cliché, placeholder type thoughts at the front of our mind to reel-out. Just move past them as quick as possible, avoiding the lightbulbs, road signs, rollercoasters, palm fringed beaches and on to a place where the gold is. Whoops, done it again! Are You Guilty Of This? Although I have extensive knowledge, skills, training and experience in the world of media I've often underplayed my abilities, feeling somewhat uncomfortable talking about what I can do. I've heard this is particularly common in women and holds us back professionally. But I'm changing. It's taken a long time - but hey 'better late than never'. 📸A couple of weeks ago, on a photo shoot, I met Claire Noble, and realised we had a mutual connection, Tara Rodrigues, winner of The Big Interiors Battle on which Claire was a contestant too. We chatted through the day and she mentioned needing a showreel. 🤔My first thought was to put her in touch with a video editor I knew, but when on the following week my schedule had a gap I started thinking, I'm the perfect person to create a showreel for Claire, why am I handing this over to someone else? 📺A few days later we were watching it together on a video call and she loved it. She asked for a small tweak, which I did, but it didn't work - the pace was all wrong. I gave her my honest feedback and she trusted my judgement. However a few days later with fresh eyes I did find a way to include her suggestion that didn't feel clunky. 👉🏾I think many of the creatives in my network will recognise this trait of looking back over a "finished" project and tweaking it to get a better result 🫤.
