What are Seasoning Checks in Timber? All wood is subject to some degree of seasoning, or drying. Seasoning checks are separations of the wood fibers that develop along the length of lumber or timber due to shrinkage of the wood as it dries. READ MORE under USEFUL LINKS: https://buff.ly/3Whb6DU

A cord of wood typically contains around 120-200 trees. A cord of wood is a measurement used for firewood and it refers to a pile of wood measuring 4 feet high by 8 feet long by 4 feet deep. The number of trees needed to make a cord of wood can vary depending on the size of the trees and how they are cut and stacked.

Spotted this from one of my connections, Emily West, this morning and thought it worthy of a re-post. No, not because I want to spread the word about antique guttering, but because there's a great sales lesson in here. When selling something, whether it's a product, service, or idea, providing an interesting story or piece of context adds immense value. Stories engage the customer on an emotional level, making the product or service more relatable and memorable. A compelling narrative helps customers understand the purpose and benefits of what you're selling, making them more likely to connect with it and ultimately make a purchase. By weaving a story into your sales pitch, you create a deeper connection with your audience, making your offering stand out in their minds. So... great sales technique, Emily, and thanks for the reminder to get my leaky guttering fixed!
From watling_reclamationon Insta "This cast iron rainwater management system is antique, but unlikely to be from the 1700’s. Gutters arguably came into being between 3000BC and 1500BC courtesy of the Indus Valley Civilisation. In Britain, it wasn’t until, yes, you guessed it, our friends the Romans settled in that we saw the first introduction of gutters. Things developed slowly until the use of cast iron allowed widespread use of guttering in the 1700’s. #castiron #rainwatermanagement #guttering #reclaimed #reclaimedmetal #salvage #hoppers #swanneck #downpipe #rain #reclaimedmaterials #gutters #castirongutters #reuse" https://lnkd.in/dPQnXnpv

What Is The Difference Between Wet Rot And Dry Rot? Wet rot and Dry rot share many similar characteristics. They are both types of fungal decay that can impact the structural integrity of your property if left unchecked. Moreover, adequate ventilation in the property is critical to prevent either from forming. The first difference between the two is how much moisture content they need to be present in timber before they can begin to germinate. Wet Rot thrives in timber with a high moisture content of around 50% or higher, whereas dry rot only requires 20% moisture presence before it can attack. The next difference is in their ability to spread throughout the building. Wet rot can grow and expand, however, the fungus needs a continuous source of moisture to grow, as a result, wet rot will remain localised in place, making it much easier to deal with. On the other hand, dry rot is a far more serious problem because it can spread beyond the initial damp germination site. Indeed, dry rot spores and fungal growth will even spread through thick walls and masonry in search of timber to attack.

Retaining walls have to work a lot harder than freestanding walls. Aside from having to support their own weight, they also have to be resistant to the lateral forces caused by soil retention. This soil can get saturated with water, which can create a tremendous amount of force (especially with the slow-draining and expansive clay soil we have in the Coastal Bend). https://lnkd.in/gEKc34-c

Who doesn't love the monsoons in Arizona? Hint: Your lumber! Monsoons can lead to mold! Summer heat is here, and it can make your lumber behave in unexpected ways. To prevent your wood from warping or twisting, ensure your bundles are tightly banded and laid flat on stickers. If not, you might face issues. Did you know that lumber "breathes"? It absorbs moisture from rain and humidity, then dries out in heat and low humidity. Have you noticed paper-wrapped lumber starting to mold? If you’re storing wood for an extended period, consider cutting the paper at the ends to allow air circulation. Moisture can seep through holes in the paper, leading to mold, especially in hot conditions. It sounds strange, but it's true! Remember, the critical stage for lumber is from the time it’s cut at the mill until it’s used in construction. Proper storage prevents lumber losses, saving money and protecting the environment by reducing waste.
