🔍 Understanding Tangential and Radial Shrinkage in Wood Drying When working with wood, knowing how it behaves as it dries is crucial for ensuring quality and stability for the end product. Two key concepts are tangential and radial shrinkage, along with the T/R ratio. 🪵 Tangential Shrinkage: This occurs perpendicular to the grain, along the growth rings of the wood. It's typically the most significant type of shrinkage, averaging around 6–10%. 🪵 Radial Shrinkage: This happens along the radius, perpendicular to the growth rings. It averages around 3–5%, less than tangential shrinkage but still important. T/R Ratio measures how wood shrinks and swells in different directions. It indicates the stability of a wood species. Small differentials in T/R numbers mean boards are less likely to warp or cup. 💡 Why It Matters: Dimensional Stability: Understanding these shrinkage types helps predict how wood will behave, ensuring better dimensional stability in the final product. Minimizing Defects: Knowledge of shrinkage can help in controlling and minimizing defects such as warping, cupping, and cracking. All lumber lengths are NOT priced proportionately. Due to a wide range of factors including mill outputs and individual length popularities; lumber is rarely priced “proportionately” by length. In other words, a 10’ board generally will NOT be half of a 20’ board. If your needs are flexible or you are cutting to much shorter lengths, we suggest you shop around the individual prices by length to determine the lowest cost per foot. What Is The Difference Between Wet Rot And Dry Rot? Wet rot and Dry rot share many similar characteristics. They are both types of fungal decay that can impact the structural integrity of your property if left unchecked. Moreover, adequate ventilation in the property is critical to prevent either from forming. The first difference between the two is how much moisture content they need to be present in timber before they can begin to germinate. Wet Rot thrives in timber with a high moisture content of around 50% or higher, whereas dry rot only requires 20% moisture presence before it can attack. The next difference is in their ability to spread throughout the building. Wet rot can grow and expand, however, the fungus needs a continuous source of moisture to grow, as a result, wet rot will remain localised in place, making it much easier to deal with. On the other hand, dry rot is a far more serious problem because it can spread beyond the initial damp germination site. Indeed, dry rot spores and fungal growth will even spread through thick walls and masonry in search of timber to attack.

Who doesn't love the monsoons in Arizona? Hint: Your lumber! Monsoons can lead to mold! Summer heat is here, and it can make your lumber behave in unexpected ways. To prevent your wood from warping or twisting, ensure your bundles are tightly banded and laid flat on stickers. If not, you might face issues. Did you know that lumber "breathes"? It absorbs moisture from rain and humidity, then dries out in heat and low humidity. Have you noticed paper-wrapped lumber starting to mold? If you’re storing wood for an extended period, consider cutting the paper at the ends to allow air circulation. Moisture can seep through holes in the paper, leading to mold, especially in hot conditions. It sounds strange, but it's true! Remember, the critical stage for lumber is from the time it’s cut at the mill until it’s used in construction. Proper storage prevents lumber losses, saving money and protecting the environment by reducing waste.

Clear Lumber Clear lumber – free of knots and other “defects” continues to be increasingly more expensive and harder to source. Remember, knots are simply where branches grew out of the trunk. These boards generally require larger diameter logs where more wood fiber allows wood to be graded out for a higher grade. Larger logs come from larger trees – those that have grown for a long time. These are rare and/or are under strict environmental regulations. There are still opportunities based on the actual logs run through the mills. Front Range Lumber made a great acquisition of high quality 4x4, 2x4 and 2x6 Douglas Fir boards.
