The Promise and Pitfalls of AI in Education. Three mistakes we must avoid: The potential for AI to transform education is immense - personalized learning, adaptive testing, intelligent tutors - the possibilities are exciting. However, in our rush to implement these powerful technologies, we must proceed thoughtfully. As educators, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. AI is a potentially powerful tool to achieve our mission better, not an end in itself. With that in mind, 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀: 𝟭. 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵" - Learning involves relationships. While AI tutors can provide academic support, we must ensure students still have human teachers who care about them and nurture their social-emotional development. The interpersonal aspects of education matter. "Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." - Martin Luther King Jr. 𝟮. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 - AI should enhance teaching, not replace teachers. The role of educators is far more than just academics - it's also mentoring, inspiring passion, and shaping character. We cannot lose sight of the immeasurable human elements of education in our excitement about AI. "Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think." - Albert Einstein 𝟯. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 - The data required for AI can improve learning outcomes, but collecting student data also comes with ethical obligations around privacy and consent. As we integrate AI, we need reasonable safeguards and transparency around data policies. "If we teach today's students as we taught yesterday's, we rob them of tomorrow." - John Dewey The path forward lies in embracing the positives of AI while proactively avoiding the pitfalls. First school powered by AI in San Diego San Diego school has started a pilot program integrating AI into their educational framework. Dubbed simply as "School AI", this initiative is a step towards personalized education. Each student is equipped with their own AI-driven chatbot—think of it as a personalized tutor—capable of adapting to individual learning needs. This technology promises to give access to personalized tutoring, traditionally available only to those with the means to afford it. Now, every child could potentially benefit from tailored learning guidance, making education more inclusive and effective. However, this raises crucial questions about the future roles of traditional educators. Initially, these AI systems are likely to complement teachers, enhancing learning experiences rather than replacing them. They could provide additional support, allowing teachers to focus on interactive and creative teaching methods. But as AI capabilities evolve, we must consider the potential for these systems to outperform human educators in certain tasks. This isn't about replacing teachers but enhancing the educational ecosystem, ensuring all students receive the support they need to thrive. It's clear that the potential for AI in education is just the beginning. Over the next few years, as the technology matures, we can expect these tools to become significantly more sophisticated and integrated into our educational systems. Is Cyprus falling behind in AI education and literacy? (I think we all know the answer!) A few weeks ago, I led a virtual class on "The use of AI in Education". The feedback was eye-opening: "This is great in theory, but our schools lack basic tech. The Ministry of Education won't even cover course costs. How can we use AI when we're so far behind?" This got me thinking about global trends I've been reading about: Mike Kentz M.A.T., M.A. an education innovator, has developed a new framework called "Stop Grading Essays, Start Grading Chats"©. He's been testing in his classroom and I am sure other educators will follow it. Experts like Nick Potkalitsky, PhD are emphasizing "process over product" in learning, adapting to AI's presence. Educators globally are redefining their roles, focusing on guiding critical thinking in an AI-assisted world. Meanwhile, in Cyprus, we're struggling with basic digitalisation. Education pioneers suggest we need to: - Develop AI literacy in educators and students - Redesign assessments for the AI era - Help educators adapt to new roles But how can we do this when we lack basic infrastructure? A really good overall snapshot of the current situation in the realm of education in the US. Although about 1000 educators sharing their opinions may seem very small, I doubt that the results will change significantly with an increased sample. Some people do think that it's a magic bullet for education, otherwise we wouldn't be discussing or experimenting AI bots in classes, for example. Teachers to be replaced by AI-based systems is a myth busted. Teachers / schools to continue performing the same way they do now in ten years' time is another myth busted. Education will change. The push will come from students and their parents. Other stakeholders will inevitably follow suit. Those who understand the strength of AI as a tool and its actual influence, especially on students, are starting to change education. Last summer, I said it was best to wait for the dust to settle. The dust is settling: ☑ we experimented and experienced AI, and its influence on many fields ☑ we more or less know, or can predict what forms AI-based tools can take; wrappers, platforms / tools based on AI, etc. ☑ we can foresee to some extent what the next improvement will be like Hence, if you are an educator, the question is... In the rapidly evolving landscape of the 21st century, it is imperative to overhaul our educational methodologies to keep pace with technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI). The urgency for this structural change spans from Early Childhood Education to Postgraduate studies. AI's integration into education is not merely a trend but a necessity, driven by its potential to enhance learning experiences, personalize education, and prepare students for a future where AI will be ubiquitous. A restructured educational methodology should embed AI at its core, leveraging its capabilities to enrich the curriculum and facilitate innovative teaching methods. This includes using AI to provide personalized learning paths tailored to individual student needs, enabling educators to identify and address learning gaps more effectively. Additionally, AI can automate administrative tasks, allowing teachers to focus more on instruction and student engagement. However, it is crucial that this integration does not isolate AI as a separate entity but rather incorporates it seamlessly into the educational framework. Educators and students alike must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to utilize AI tools proficiently, ensuring that AI acts as a complementary aid rather than a standalone solution. This approach fosters a symbiotic relationship between technology and traditional educational practices, ultimately leading to a more dynamic, inclusive, and effective learning environment. By embracing AI in education, we can unlock new opportunities for creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, preparing students not only for the jobs of tomorrow but for a lifetime of learning and adaptation in an AI-driven world.

A topic in education that I find extremely intriguing is the use of AI, not by students, but by educators. I have heard from many of my peers in the College of Education that their host teachers use AI all the time to create lessons quickly. There is even an Abbott Elementary episode about teachers and their use of AI. (Is anyone else a fan of the show?) Research has shown that AI can create test questions and lesson plans that align with learning standards. Personally, I find AI to be unsettling in general, but if I were a teacher short on time, I could see myself using it. There are a couple of questions this education trend makes me think of: 1. Have you used AI to create lesson plans, assignments, tests, etc? I haven't used AI to create lesson plans for school or pre-service teaching, especially since schools and colleges have AI detection technologies now. 2. What issues do you think could arise from the increasing use of AI to teach in classrooms? This question makes me think of the debate around AI versus human art. Yes, it can make art, or in this case lesson plans, but there is no deeper meaning within AI art. I think the same could be said when it comes to its use in education. Although it is a useful educational technology, I think that education needs the thoughts and feelings of humans to be truly effective. AI is too literal and unfeeling, but humans can create lessons and content that contain nuance and require more critical thinking. 3. Do you think that teaching will be taken over completely by technology in the far future? (a little far-fetched but still extremely interesting to think about!) Possibly. I mean, schools did go from having a computer lab to issuing personal laptops, to partial or full-time online/virtual learning, and now to the use of AI in the span of 15 years. But I don't think that learning is as effective unless you have a physical teacher, so I hope not.
