InnovateEDU joined 13 other leading education organizations in calling on House Committee on Energy and Commerce Chairman Bob Latta to hold a hearing on a critical AI Literacy bill. "Ensuring that America’s students comprehend the basic principles, concepts, and applications of AI, as well as its implications, limitations, and ethical considerations, is essential for the workforce of today and the future and for maintaining our economic prosperity and global competitiveness. Providing widespread access to AI literacy to students in our schools, colleges, and universities will also further your work to narrow the digital divide and ensure - according to the Digital Equity Act of 2021, which was passed as part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law - 'full participation in the society and economy of the United States.'" Big news out of DC today, as Senator Maria Cantwell and Senator Jerry Moran have introduced the bipartisan NSF AI Education Act that would revolutionize AI education in the US. This bill, backed by the National Science Foundation, includes groundbreaking initiatives to foster AI literacy from preK-12. This announcement is especially welcome after last week’s disappointing release of the Senate’s AI Roadmap, which made almost no mention of education. Here are the key highlights: - The bill directs the NSF to create publicly available "playbooks" for introducing AI in classrooms nationwide, with special consideration for rural and economically depressed areas (unsurprisingly, we love this). - Exciting opportunities for educators to advance their knowledge in AI through NSF-funded fellowships, enhancing their ability to integrate AI into their teaching practices. - Increased access to AI tools and applications, prioritizing rural schools, community colleges, and minority-serving institutions. These issues are at the heart of our work at AI for Education. Which is why we have partnered with the Federation of American Scientists on a policy proposal that aligns with and expands much of the content in this bill with an aim for deep support of responsible AI adoption across the US K12 education system. It’s so encouraging to see the increasing number of voices calling for comprehensive AI literacy in schools, and we hope to see a lot of forward momentum on this issue soon. Let's work together to bring AI literacy to every classroom - contact your senators to let them know that you support the NSF AI Education Act of 2024! #AIforEducation #AIinSchools #EdTech #FutureOfLearning #AIProfessionalDevelopment #STEMEducation

Go Amanda Bickerstaff and your team! Keep this news coming. I'm excited about the new #NSF AI Education Act introduced by Senators Cantwell and Moran. As a professor specializing in AI education, I find this bill aligns closely with my professional focus and teaching experiences. The bill’s initiative to create AI "playbooks" accessible for all classrooms, including those in economically challenged and rural areas, is particularly important. In my role, I’m seeing how vital good resources are for opening up education to everyone. The NSF-funded fellowships for educators to deepen their AI knowledge also match my ongoing commitment to continuously improving my teaching skills. Best of all, increasing access to AI tools in under resourced communities, such as rural schools and MSI colleges, is another aspect of the bill that I strongly support. When teaching courses like AI Literacies with Design Thinking and AI in Business, I know how transformative AI can be in education. I literally see it in students faces and work. It’s great to see these efforts gaining momentum, and I’m optimistic about the positive impact they will have on our educational system. Let’s keep pushing for broad AI literacy to ensure a bright and inclusive future for all students. #AIforEducation #AIinSchools #EdTech #FutureOfLearning #AIProfessionalDevelopment #STEMEducation

Amanda Bickerstaff Good to see because AI could finally solve a problem that’s long plagued education https://lnkd.in/gE4CJWGQ AI has the potential to level the educational playing field not just to improve education, but to make high-quality, personalized learning accessible for all. American confidence in higher education has dropped from 57% to 36% since 2015, per Gallup, a dramatic slide. https://lnkd.in/gPytxYUX Only 1 in 4 Americans think you need a college degree to get a high-paying job per the Pew Research Center. https://lnkd.in/gPDABT_N Cheers..Steve AI startup advisor 'force multiplier' https://lnkd.in/g38mWcs

In April, our grantee, the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE), convened over 60 state and federal policymakers, edtech innovators, school system leaders, and advocates to discuss how AI can drive meaningful, positive change in education. In a new report, CRPE highlights key insights that emerged from this convening: how AI can enable needed changes in our schools, how current conditions in the edtech market act as barriers to closing equity gaps, and how policy and practice must adapt for lasting system change.

I agree with this synthesis from Wendy Jones and Jennette Vanderpool that K–12 schools looking to adequately prepare students to participate successfully in a rapidly changing economy can no longer avoid artificial intelligence. According to the Office of Educational Technology’s release on the plan, this includes “dynamic applications of technology to explore, create and engage in critical analysis of academic content and knowledge.” I would add an important clarifying point necessary in these AI discussions - that allowing students and teachers access to "dynamic applications of technology" does not mean that all learning needs to happen through these methods. The pencil, the playground, the studio, the soccer field... remain just as relevant, perhaps, more, than they ever have. The CAIS is hosting a network talk on May2nd that explores how schools might plan for and approach the complexity of educating young people for the AI-enabled world they inhabit. “AI offers unprecedented opportunities to tackle complex challenges like widening achievement gaps, teacher shortages, and mental health crises among students — but AI systems must also promote equity and access, particularly for historically marginalized communities. There must be policy guardrails to protect student privacy. And there must be high quality training to empower educators. Achieving this vision requires bold leadership and a clear understanding of each stakeholder’s role. While AI can be a powerful tool to address long-standing inequities and improve educational outcomes, it requires strategic and collaborative efforts. The call to action is clear: Educators, policymakers, education technology innovators and community leaders must join forces to create resilient, adaptable education systems.” How California can help all schools harness AI, avoid its pitfalls with Robin Lake from Center on Reinventing Public Education: https://lnkd.in/gedDjM2p #AIinEducation #DigitalDivide #ResponsibleAI

The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) has established a new Commission on Artificial Intelligence and Education, convening "leaders in education and business to chart a course for how AI is used in classrooms and how to prepare a workforce that is being transformed by technology." South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and West Virginia's Marshall University President Brad D. Smith will co-chair the two-year commission. SREB's 16 states will provide commission members from governors' offices, education and workforce agencies, K–12 and postsecondary faculty, business executives, managers, and leaders. A list of commissioners, information about the first meeting, and responsibilities of its committees will be announced in the coming weeks, SREB said in a release. The commission's first meeting, to be held in March 2024, will be to review research and industry data and hear from education experts. It will then make focus recommendations for the commission to tackle in these general areas: AI in teaching and learning in K–12 and postsecondary institutions; Establishing AI policies in K–12 schools, colleges, and universities; and How to prepare students for careers involving AI.
