OPINION by Lida Jennings: The school year may already be underway, but the reality is that schools will be fighting to staff their classrooms all year. Anything we can do to mitigate the detrimental effects that understaffed schools have on students should be a priority. Investing in tutors is an actionable way to help staff schools with diverse educators, with an added benefit of creating a pipeline of tomorrow’s teachers. We have the proof that it will help our students, so what are we waiting for?

🗞️Tutoring News: As a major fiscal cliff approaches, how can states and #schooldistricts avert a tragic loss of educational opportunity and student enrichment? "One smart investment is in high-dosage #tutoring that can produce measurable and significant results. School systems can purchase tutoring sessions for students from certified vendors. While tutoring is an age-old concept, in this moment of ESSER funding it is also a powerful tool and initiative to address systemic discrimination in public education by offering person-to-person aid to those groups most affected by learning loss." D.C. students who got frequent, small group tutoring improved their reading and math scores after the return to in-person classes, attended more classes and had a stronger sense of belonging at school, according to new research into the city’s multimillion-dollar tutoring program. The findings from Stanford University are encouraging, researchers said: Although students have yet to fully recover from the pandemic-induced slump that saw test scores plummet and absenteeism rise, children in D.C. are making progress. “Those students who were receiving high-impact tutoring are shrinking the gap with their peers,” Nancy Waymack, director of research partnerships and policy at Stanford’s National Student Support Accelerator, said about the D.C. program. “It’s exciting, the number of students that they served and it’s exciting that they are hitting the population that I think needs to receive high-impact tutoring the most.” #Tutoring #PandemicRecovery #EducationalEquity #Students https://lnkd.in/e3HbDSMt
