Cellphone bans in schools: Easy to enforce? Banning cellphones in schools has gained momentum across various states and districts, but enforcement remains a challenge. Educators find that while setting the policy is straightforward, managing compliance is complex. Principal Sham Bevel of Bayside Middle School in Virginia Beach noted the difficulty in getting students to forgo their phones for traditional games. Various methods to enforce the bans include using lockers or Yondr pouches, which lock the phones until the end of the school day. However, these methods have their drawbacks, such as students finding ways around the restrictions. Despite parents' divided opinions, some experts and educators argue that strict enforcement can lead to better focus and improved test scores. The effectiveness of these bans ultimately hinges on consistent enforcement and addressing the nuanced needs of all students, including those with disabilities. Harnessing AI for strategic testing: Revolutionizing education and boosting student achievement As educators gear up for the new school year, they are exploring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize education, particularly through strategic testing. AI tools like ChatGPT can create diverse, personalized, and low-stakes assessments quickly, enabling teachers to leverage the "testing effect"—a phenomenon where students retain more knowledge through frequent testing than traditional studying. By incorporating AI-generated assessments, educators can enhance student learning, save valuable time, and focus on personalized instruction. This approach offers a balanced, effective way to integrate AI into classrooms, promoting both student achievement and teacher well-being. Parents show strong support for local schools despite national skepticism, survey reveals A recent survey by the National Parents Union, polling 1,518 parents of K-12 public school students, found that 82% of parents gave teachers an 'A' or 'B' for their performance this year. While parents expressed confidence in their children's schools and teachers, with 72% confident in principals and schools, trust decreased at higher levels of the education system. Only 45% rated their state governors favorably, and even fewer supported U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona (32%) and President Joe Biden (33%). This reflects a longstanding gap between local and national perceptions of education quality. Despite increased polarization and dissatisfaction with the national education system, parents remain invested in public education and supportive of their local schools and teachers. Schools fail immigrant students, investigation finds An investigation by Jo Napolitano for The 74 Media reveals a scarcity mindset among U.S. schools regarding immigrant students. Posing as the aunt of a fictional 19-year-old Venezuelan student, Napolitano found that only 209 out of 630 schools agreed to enroll him, despite his legal right to attend. This reluctance stems from a widespread belief, she writes, that immigrants drain resources, even though evidence shows immigrants boost the economy and labor force. The investigation highlights how many schools use deterrents and civil rights violations to dissuade immigrant enrollment, underscoring the urgent need for schools to recognize the benefits of educating immigrant students. The findings call for soul-searching among educators and officials about their enrollment policies and their broader implications for the future workforce. This report emphasizes the critical importance of providing education to all students, regardless of their background, to ensure national growth and prosperity. Kids in regular tutoring do better in school, attend more, Stanford study finds D.C. students who got frequent, small group tutoring improved their reading and math scores after the return to in-person classes, attended more classes and had a stronger sense of belonging at school, according to a Stanford University report on the city's multimillion-dollar tutoring program. The Stanford researchers looked at data from the 2022-2023 school year, the first year of the high-impact tutoring program, a three-year $33m “high-impact tutoring” initiative launched in 2022 in the wake of the pandemic, with a focus on Black children and students living in poverty who have traditionally struggled to access tutoring. The study found that by the end of the year, students who were selected for more intensive tutoring were performing at levels closer to their peers who were not tapped for services. The results were most dramatic for kids who had more than 20 tutoring sessions throughout the year. Children were also less likely to miss school on days they had sessions, especially middle-schoolers and students who had struggled with attendance during the 2021-2022 school year. Much of the federal pandemic money that has supported high-impact tutoring in D.C. is going away; however, city officials plan to spend $4.8m in local funds this school year to keep some programs going.
