In West and Central Africa, despite recent progress, nearly half a million refugee children remain without access to education. School enrolment rates for refugees in the region lag behind the global average, posing a significant challenge to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. At the same time, escalating insecurity has led to a doubling of school closures to more than 13,000 by the end of the school year 2023. #InternationalEducationDay is a reminder of the critical role of education in promoting peace and development. In a region plagued by violence and insecurity, where attacks on education are on the rise, the commitment to support the education community is paramount. The path to sustainable development requires leaving no child behind, underscoring the urgency of strengthening social cohesion through education in partnership with host communities. The international community must unite to end attacks on schools and teachers and ensure sustainable support for quality learning for every child in search of a better future.
On this #EducationDay, we’re reminded of the significant role that education plays in empowering refugees. Protecting refugees' right to quality education is investing in creating lasting peace and a better future for everyone.

Another critical issue that needs to be discussed is the "school-age itself" especially for refugees whose education systems in their home countries are often broken and fail to provide early education. Many refugees struggle to pursue higher education at an older age, and when displacement disrupts their lives again, their educational aspirations are put at risk. By the time they can focus on education again, many are beyond the typical school age, which becomes a significant barrier to accessing educational opportunities like scholarships. We need education to be age-inclusive, recognizing that anyone with the zeal to pursue learning should have the opportunity to do so, regardless of their age. More than half of all school-age refugee children are out of school. In most protracted situations of displacement, inclusion in the host-countries' education systems is the only sustainable solution to educate the world's refugees. The UNHCR Education Report highlights a critical issue: over half of the world’s 14.8 million school-aged refugee children are still out of formal education. This not only jeopardizes their future prosperity but also denies them the opportunity to reach their full potential. Now more than ever, it is crucial to establish inclusive education systems that provide refugees with the same access as local students.
