Reports of conflict-related sexual violence have risen by 50% in recent years. Yet, funding shortfalls are forcing humanitarian organizations to cut essential services. This International Women’s Day, we raise the alarm: these gaps are putting displaced women and girls at unprecedented risk. #IWD2025 https://bit.ly/3Dx83RB

For the first time in 10 years, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Yusra Mardini returns to Syria—her home. This journey is deeply personal, reuniting with family and friends after years apart, while also confronting the harsh reality for her people, who are working to rebuild their lives from the ground up. "Returning home after 10 years was incredibly emotional— hugging my family and reconnecting with friends were moments I’ll never forget. What I saw with UNHCR deeply moved me: the strength of my people, especially women. The shortages—food, water, shelter—are heartbreaking, but the strength and hope I witnessed give me faith that Syria can recover. With support, these communities can heal and thrive again. Investing in local businesses, skills and education is essential for rebuilding and UNHCR is doing crucial work to make that a reality." Yusra’s visit comes at a critical moment, as more than 1 million displaced people and refugees return home, struggling with severe shortages of food, fuel, clean water and medical care. UNHCR is the largest humanitarian agency in Syria, with over 400 staff on the ground providing essential support and protection. Together with its partners, UNHCR is doing critical work to help returnees rebuild their lives—offering transportation, legal support and emergency assistance to meet basic needs like food, shelter and clothing. Amid these challenges, there is resilience and hope. But Syria needs more than peace—it needs jobs, schools, hospitals, and vital services to rebuild and move forward.
