A National Skills Passport (NSP) has the potential to help with education and employment decisions. This initiative holds significant value for learners, the higher education sector and the broader economy, ushering in a new era of lifelong learning and a workforce to support our national aspirations. We see opportunity for the NSP to be more than a conventional passport; it signifies a transformative shift towards an interconnected and flexible education system. By breaking down barriers between learning institutions and industry, the NSP enables a fluid and learner-centric approach, addressing immediate workforce needs and lifelong learning requirements. We look forward to contributing to the ongoing dialogue about the NSP and reform of the education system. 🔥 Follow me for conversations about Skills-Based Training to create a Sustainable Workforce. 🔥 Overcoming a Poorly Educated Workforce: A Focus on Literacy and Skills-Based Training. The challenge of training a workforce that emerges from the educational system with inadequate literacy and numeracy skills is stark, with implications for both individual career prospects and organizational effectiveness. In the United States, the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) has highlighted that a significant portion of the adult population possesses below-basic literacy skills. Similarly, in Canada, the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) has revealed concerns over literacy and numeracy levels among adults. Addressing these challenges requires a shift towards skills-based training, moving away from traditional academic testing and learning models. This approach focuses on the practical application of skills in real-world scenarios, emphasizing competency over theoretical knowledge. For instance, rather than relying on written tests to assess progress, organizations could implement performance-based assessments that allow employees to demonstrate their understanding through practical tasks. Additionally, integrating technology-based learning platforms that offer personalized learning paths can help cater to individual skill levels and learning paces, providing support where it is most needed. Implementing such solutions necessitates a major overhaul of traditional training methodologies, with a greater emphasis on accessibility, inclusivity, and the practical application of skills. By focusing on building competencies that directly translate to job performance, organizations can not only overcome the limitations posed by varying literacy and numeracy levels but also enhance their overall productivity and competitiveness.

World Bank Digital Skills Development in EAP (East Asia Pacific): Key Findings and Recommendations from the Country Studies [10 June 2024] https://lnkd.in/g2PmkGu7 or https://lnkd.in/g4NZb_cY Unprecedented disruptions that COVID-19 pandemic caused to education compelled almost all countries of the world, including those of EAP region, to adopt education technology and online learning approaches to recover learning loss in the educational institutions. This necessitated development of digital skills among the teachers and students. On the other hand, industries started going online due to closure of businesses for several months or years. All this required digitally skilled human resources, but significant digital gaps existed in the educational institutions and industries. This analytical work was designed to examine the evolution and status of digital skills development, identify key challenges, best practices, and lessons for informing digital skills development policies and initiatives, as well as to promote policy dialogue, knowledge sharing, and cooperation in the EAP region. The study team designed, to illustrate the state of EAP digital skills landscape, an analytical framework based on the World Bank's (WB) digital capabilities framework that includes structural elements, enabling resources and digital skills training programs. The team furthermore identified key actions in three elements (digital skills policy, enabling digital infrastructure, and digital skills training) to guide the six participating country teams to collect all needed information and analyze the best practice examples of each action. The study used a mixed methods approach of qualitative and quantitative analyses, including analysis of policy documents, literature and case studies, and meta-synthesis on six country studies.

Very happy that Issue 30 of the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education has been published. Rachel Bancroft, Rosemary P. and me contributed a scoping review on digital confidence - something that many people talk about but no-one has yet fully defined.... https://lnkd.in/gPMJ7Yqh "Digital confidence has been increasingly cited as key for staff and student development in tertiary education, often alongside concepts of digital competence or digital capabilities. In the past three years it has formed part of the discussion in our sector (higher education) around adapting to this time of rapid change, especially during the period of Covid-19 emergency learning and teaching moved online. While digital confidence has long been a focus of our learning technology staff support team, we noticed through discussion with peers and previous reading and research, that our understanding of what digital confidence is and how it develops sometimes differed from the way in which it was represented in the journals and grey literature that we were initially reading. This prompted our scoping review of the literature, exploring whether there is a shared understanding of digital confidence in the tertiary sector and how its relationship to digital competence and similar concepts is understood. The review also discusses implications for organisational digital transformation strategies, student employability, and the wellbeing of students and staff, as well as noting the important role learning developers could play in supporting the development of digital confidence."
