OZAN JAQUETTE and his research team at the University of California at Los Angeles (and the University of Arizona) have done cutting-edge work for The Joyce Foundation on the recruiting priorities of public flagship and research universities. https://lnkd.in/eNKyqyVh I was extremely impressed with the reports that he and his colleagues Karina Salazar and Patricia Martin wrote for The Institute for College Access & Success (TICAS) on the student list business and jumped at the chance to adapt those reports for the book. https://lnkd.in/eJCehKcC As I wrote yesterday, there has recently been a blurring of the lines between the standardized testing companies, which have long dominated the student-list business, and enrollment management firms, which often purchase names from the student lists on behalf of colleges. Not only have The College Board and ACT started providing consulting services to colleges, but enrollment management firms have begun to break in to the student list business. https://lnkd.in/ewbKaMDM The recent emergence of the giant enrollment management firm EAB as a major player in the student list business is especially troubling to Jaquette and his colleagues, as the company require colleges to purchase expensive software and/or consulting services in exchange for access to its proprietary database of prospective students. "Should access to a substantial share of college-going high school students be restricted to the clients of a private firm?" they ask. "And should private firms be able to funnel prospective students toward their own clients and away from other colleges?" How EAB has established a firm foothold in the student list business and what the implications of that are for equity in higher education? And what can be done about it?
