Empathy—that was the first word that came to my mind when reflecting on everything my father told me about Mr. Ratan Tata. Growing up in Jamshedpur, or as many know it, Tatanagar, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact the Tatas had on our lives. My father, who worked for Tata, often shared stories about Mr. Tata, and what stood out most wasn't just his brilliant business acumen but his genuine care for his employees and their families.
In the corporate world, where deals are made daily and success often seems to hinge on numbers alone, it's rare to find leaders who maintain their humanity. But with Mr. Tata, kindness and humility weren't just traits—they were the foundation of his leadership. He made people feel valued, something that's becoming increasingly scarce in a world where everyone seems replaceable. It wasn’t just my father who admired him; everyone who worked with the Tatas would sing his praises, not just for his vision, but for his ability to connect with people on a human level.
Through these stories, Mr. Tata became my role model. He wasn’t just a visionary or a successful industrialist; he was someone who, throughout his remarkable journey, never lost the human touch. Today, I’ve lost my mentor, but the lessons he imparted to me, and to millions of others, will remain.
In a world where fame and wealth often overshadow kindness, Let Mr. Tata remind us that humility and kindness are as vital as success. That is perhaps the greatest lesson he left for the corporate world—a lesson that, sadly, is still yet to be fully embraced.
“The man did not have to stand outside the burning building worrying for his people. But he did.
He did not have to visit hospitals to reassure people like Manoj Thakur, a hawker injured outside Leopold Cafe during the 26/11 terrorist attack, and promise him that everything would be all right. But he did.
He has changed so many lives, not just mine.”
— Sunu Verghese, who lost her husband in the horrific events at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai on 26/11, on Ratan Tata.
A man who touched countless lives, the legendary Ratan Tata showed India that true richness lies not in material wealth, but in ethics, integrity, empathy, and humility.
We will miss you tremendously, sir. Your compassion will live on in our hearts and inspire generations to come.
