Nonprofits are driven and sustained by selflessness. Truly, it’s what differentiates nonprofits from proprietary for-profit companies and it’s an incredibly powerful force. Volunteers who commit to serving and supporting the causes they believe in comprise the boards of directors that govern, and steer, and propel nonprofits to achieve amazing things. On a recent visit to one of Easterseals’ 70 Affiliates across the country, I spent a few days in the company of the staff and board of Easterseals-Goodwill Northern Rocky Mountain. It was a tremendously positive meeting because so many board members participated so fully and with such heart and passion. Every time I have the honor of spending time in the company of our Affiliate leadership and their boards of directors, it reaffirms for me my long-held belief in the words of Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
