Reflecting on Black History Month

Reflecting on Black History Month

As February comes to a close, we sat down with Frantz Tiffeau , vice president of global diversity, inclusion and belonging, to talk about Black History Month. Frantz reflected on some of the important takeaways from the month’s celebrations.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

I look at Black History Month as a time to reflect on the history and accomplishments of those who came before us, and try to appreciate the sacrifices they made to get us to where we are today. I also try to focus on the work that still has yet to be done. Here at Edwards, I’m proud to support initiatives that further diversity, inclusion and belonging every day. We have an active employee resource group (ERG) called the African Heritage Forum which leads a few events during Black History Month and encourages all employees to participate. Among other things, this ERG has led a popular “Myth Busters” event to designed to debunk myths about black culture through healthy dialogue. It’s also a way for all employees to learn about the historical relevance of some misunderstood stereotypes and myths about blacks in America.

How have you celebrated this month during your time at Edwards?

Since this month also happens to coincide with American Heart Month, over the last two years I have participated in activities and initiatives intended to bring greater awareness to the inequities in heart disease for the Black community and help with educational efforts to overcome those risks and challenges. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for all Americans, but certain groups, particularly Black Americans, face a greater risk than others. For the last two years, in partnership with our Patient Experience team, we have hosted a panel discussion including heart specialists to inform our employees about the obstacles that underserved communities face in the battle against heart disease and what steps we are taking to try to overcome those obstacles.

What do you believe are the most important takeaways/learnings from these celebrations?

To me, it’s both a time to celebrate and reflect. To appreciate your past, learn from it and stay connected to it as you forge your path in the future. These events also serve as a reminder that we can continue to come together, learn from each other and work better together.
