Yesterday at GBBF saw quite a poignant moment, a serving Prime Minister pouring cask beer at CAMRA's flagship national event. Theres been a lot of criticism regards this and the government's decision to use the festival as a platform for their updated policy. There is certainly no hiding from the reality of what some of this updated alcohol policy brings tax relief on smaller breweries capacity. However personal politics aside I dont see it as all negative like many other individuals and trade bodies are doing. CAMRA is a volunteer lobbying organisation, whereby members (myself included) work to preserve our unique beer serving style for its unique drinking experience no longer practiced elsewhere in the world. We also lobby for pub and beer related issues. Having the PM attend, for me gives our organisation some real credibility in the sense that our messaging without donors or other means will be listened to by serving MPs. Regards the policy itself that went live yesterday it really isnt all doom and gloom. Although most high alcohol drinks categories see an increase in rates, the opposite is true for low and no alchohol beverages. This represents the opportunity for all sectors; Beer & Cider, but perhaps more notably Wine & Spirits to expand into new markets of low/no and draught serve without the former restriction of tax being the same across all ABV%.

Yet another example of UK policymakers not understanding the industry. Wine is generally not vinified to a % abv. The best possible wine is made with the vintage of grapes which is largely weather dependant. Sometimes can be say,12%, sometimes 13.5%. With this new duty policy winemakers face the choice of changing price for duty changes each vintage, or manipulate the wine for the UK market to hit an abv. Both options ridiculous. Not to mention the admin burden ... Luckily this part of the policy not implemented until 2025, so maybe, just maybe, someone in government will see sense before then!! #winebusiness #excisetax https://lnkd.in/ebc7gzZy

This a great article in Wine Business Monthly. I completely agree. And, the next generations want wine clubs or subscriptions that offer more sense of community or belonging. They want to get social and meet, interact, and share experiences with other club members, even if they are across the country (in fact, some think that's even better). I also find that less wineries are offering affordable events for members to attend. As a local, it doesn't have to be fancy. I'd much rather go to a fun BBQ at a winery than a fancy restaurant for dinner but most winery events are too high-brow and cost prohibitive. Are you a member of a wine club (or two)? What are your thoughts? #wineclub #dtc #winery #subscriptions

Excellent summary on the news that pint bottles of champagne might be legalised. Interesting to note that this idea has not been part of any consultation, wider or specific, so the evidence base is unknown. Another factor will be the willingness of bottle manufacturers to "retool" in order to produce the new size. Perhaps the biggest question is whether or not any legislative time will ultimately prove possible, especially with a number of other genuinely important policies competing for space.
My latest article in the current edition of Scottish Licensed Trade News is about Winston Churchill’s alleged favourite tipple - a pint of champagne. The UK Government is changing the weights and measures rules to allow new measures for still and sparkling wine. More below :
Could pints of champagne really be a so-called ‘Brexit benefit’?

The Government introduced a new alcohol tax. Up until 1st August 2023, beers and spirits were taxed according to their alcoholic strength, while cider & perry and wine & wine-made products were taxed based on the total volume of the product. The new duty will see the system change & the stronger the alcohol, the higher the tax. The Government thinks this is good, the industry have concerns. Discover why! Huge thanks to the following great women in the drinks industry for contributing to our feature. Their voices are fascinating and balanced and include dawn davies Buying Director of Speciality Drinks Group & The Whisky Exchange, Queena Wong founder of Curious Vines Limited, drinks broadcaster & writer Helena Nicklin, Emma McClarkin OBE Chief Exec of British Beer & Pub Association, distillers Zoe Arnold-Bennett of Shed One, Cecile Beaufils of The Spirit of One, Kathy Caton of Brighton Gin, sherry producer Melissa Draycott MD of Gonzalez Byass UK, and Eloise Feilden senior staff writer at The Drinks Business.
